Pippins Holiday Cottage, Penybont

Pippins Holiday Cottage, Penybont Holiday cottage in mid-Wales, perfect for walking holidays and getting away from it all. Pippins is a comfortable and cosy self-catering cottage.

Your Hosts, Vikki and Gill welcome you to Pippins Holiday Cottage, a converted granary adjacent to our 17th century Grade II listed home. It is ideal for nature-lovers, walkers or for anyone who wants to take time out from busy and stressful lives in order to relax. Situated in rural mid-Wales, a few miles from Llandrindod Wells, this “upside-down” barn conversion offers stunning views over the We

lsh countryside, with historical sites, wildlife and country walks straight from the door. Our wildlife cameras regularly capture badgers by night, and in the warmer months bats will take flight as dusk begins to fall. Red Kites and Buzzards are always around and there will be the opportunity to see many other birds on our feeders, particularly in winter. The River Ithon is also home to Kingfishers, Dippers and Otters. Overlooking Pippins is Castle Bank the site of the ruined medieval Cefnllys Castle. At the foot of Castle Bank near the River Ithon lies the isolated church of St Michael’s, believed to date back to the 13th century. From Pippins’ front gate there is direct access to the Heart of Wales Line Walking Trail which weaves between stations along the line. This Public Right of Way takes you down the hill to St Michael’s Church, then on to Bailey Einon Nature Reserve. Pippins is approximately 30 minutes by car to the Elan Valley, renowned for its magnificent scenery, wildlife and International Dark Sky Park status. The Elan Valley has many walks and trails and over 80 miles of designated rights of way.

First snow of the season here at Pippins. The surrounding hills and trees always look so beautiful when dusted in snow. Not quite enough for a snowman yet but it's still steadily coming down. What is it like where you are? Feel free to share your snow photos with us! ❄️ ⛄️❄️

Wonderful article about our local independent whole foods shop, well done Vans!

In a world of dominant chain supermarkets, finding a small, independent shop with decades of history is rare. But in the heart of Llandrindod Wells, Van's Good Food Shop has not only survived—it’s thrived!

This family-run whole food shop isn’t just a place to pick up your shopping; it’s a community cornerstone, a symbol of resilience, and a testament to ethical, people-centered business.

We sat down with Van and his daughter Rosie to hear their incredible story. From pioneering organic foods in the early days to navigating the highs and lows of small business life, their journey is one of passion, dedication, and deep community connection.

We recently visited Erwood Station Gallery and Cafe ( Erwood Station Craft Centre Est.2023 ) and we would highly recommend a visit to our guests. There was a wonderful selection for lunch including drinks and cakes (lots of gluten free options too). The shop and gallery is great for a browse of local handmade items for sale. You can even sit up in the carriages to watch the local wildlife with the binoculars provided. 🐦🐦‍⬛☕️🍰🥪

Pleased to be able to help clear this landmark in Llandrindod which is one step towards the soon-to-be-announced Geoparc Calon Cymru – Heart of Wales Geopark. The geopark will aim to celebrate and explain the incredible geological heritage of the local area, together with the biodiversity, history and culture of this remarkable area of Mid Wales.

An iconic rock in Llandrindod Wells is seeing the light of day once more, after volunteers removed a covering of ivy and brambles that had made it invisible.

We have been lucky to have some beautiful weather here in Mid Wales recently so we made of the most of it and went for an afternoon walk. The Elan Valley is always our most recommended place to visit with beautiful walks, scenery and wildlife. Luna was very tired by the time we got home! 🏞🚵‍♀️🚶‍♂️🐾🥾

We're inching closer to being able to launch the geopark... so here's a warm-up!

The Heart of Wales Geopark will cover one of the most important areas of ancient prehistory in the world. The story told in these rocks is that of a long-lost volcanic island, from a time known as the Ordovician, when Scotland was across an ocean and Wales was mostly a sea. You can't look out of your window and see the volcano... but the evidence is beautifully preserved in the rocks, when you know how to look.
High ground like the beautiful summits of Llandegley Rocks is made mostly of igneous rocks: either frozen magma chambers, now exhumed, or the results of massive volcanic eruptions. In this case, that cliff running around the left of the hill is also a large, quartz-covered fault plane, where the rocks slipped and were sheared apart as we crashed into Scotland some 400 million years ago...

Helping you to understand these stories, and those of the creatures that lived here, and indeed how they have shaped human culture today... all that is going to be our mission over the coming years, so please stay tuned!

Rather a grey day in the Elan Valley, but still a beautiful place to be. The wildlife carvings are always fascinating to see and nice to see a few new ones added to the collection.
