Enjoyed some down time yesterday with a trip to our favourite dog walking beach. We were the only ones there! Sorry, only managed to get one dog in the photo.... the other two were too busy chasing waves! We are so lucky to have this fabulous place nearby. ❤️

Well the piglets have arrived, another first for us, but not without some drama.
Ada, the smaller of our two sows, caught us somewhat unaware and farrowed on Sunday in the pig ark rather than the comfy stall that we were getting ready for her in the barn. We think she has had nine piglets but won't know for sure until they are a little older and get out and about. We have managed to get a few photos and videos when Ada has left them for her breakfast or dinner.
Edith's farrowing was more cause for concern and a good job that we had her in the barn. She delivered three piglets in the early hours of this morning but then no more appeared. We left her for a while but still only three when we returned. Nick, being the trooper that he is, checked and couldn't feel anymore. We were now very concerned so called in the veterinary professionals. However, at 6:30am the vet decreed that there were no more to come. Three piglets is a very small litter for a large sow with a huge milk bar so it could mean some very porky piglets (excuse the pun).
The Rhydowen menagerie grows again.

The very cold winter hasn’t been kind to the cottage garden. A number of the shrubs have either needed to be removed or given a severe trim. I am pleased to say that our stunning acer in front of the cottages has survived and looks like fire in the beautiful evening sunshine here at Llwyn Holiday Cottages - Rhydowen. The old apple tree is full of blossom and might be providing another bumper crop this year as long as Jack Frost doesn’t pay a late visit.

Another milestone reached..... our first lambs have been born on the smallholding. Welcome the twins - bit of bonus as the ewe was scanned as expecting a single. One down, eight to go!!!

At long last we reached agreement on which breed of sheep to bring onto the smallholding resulting in the arrival of these beauties. They are Badger Face Welsh Mountain sheep, sub-variety Torddu (pronounced Torthee). They will be with the ram shortly so fingers crossed we should have some lambs around March next year. Exciting.........

Been a while since posting but a lot has been happening here in Rhydowen. The long awaited roofing works have been completed - we think it looks great and hope you do too. Pigs arrived back in February and are growing by the day. Even more exciting is that Mary gave birth to her baby boy, Walter (or affectionately known as Walt) at the end of May and Ruby gave birth to twins... how wonderful .... a few days ago, so welcome to Wilfred (Wilf) and Wynne. Hope you like the photos.

Holiday cottages in rural West Wales

Wishing all of the wonderful guests that have joined us here in 2021 a very happy and healthy 2022 and we very much look forward to seeing you here again. We have plenty of availability apart from May when we are having some work done to the cottages.
There have been a few changes here in Rhydowen - the animals on the smallholding are increasing. Cows and calves arrived in October (photo of Ruby, Mary and their calves Rosie and Martha). The long awaited arrival of the pigs - due here is February 2022 (photo of the girls) and of course the dogs, cat and chickens (more photos).
We look forward to sharing this all with guests in the future.
