While on a survey our New Quay team encountered a large pod of common dolphins including this newborn calf who was feeding from its mother π¬
Calves nurse through a specialised technique where they form a seal around their motherβs mammary slit, allowing them to feed while swimming. Nursing lasts up to 18 months, though calves may begin experimenting with solid food within the first few months. The bond between a mother and her calf is strong, with the mother providing protection, teaching social behaviours, and helping the calf learn to hunt fish and squid.
