Garreg Ddu Dam 💧

Did you know that Garreg Ddu Dam in the lower Elan Valley plays a vital role in supplying water to Birmingham? This submerged dam may not be as visible as others, but it’s essential for keeping a constant water flow to the city. 🌊 It also supports the beautiful masonry pillars that carry the access roadway to the River Claerwen.

What makes Garreg Ddu so special? It holds water back to ensure water can always be extracted at the Foel Tower. Without it, the Caban Coch Reservoir would be too low to rely on gravity to feed water to Birmingham – a problem solved without the need for pumps.

Its importance was proven in 1937 when an extreme drought hit, making the Elan Valley water levels drop to critical levels.
