🎊 RHOS YR HAFOD IS BAE CEREDIGION CAMRA PUB OF THE YEAR 2023 🎊

Congratulations to the Rhos Yr Hafod in Cross Inn (Llanon) which has been selected as the Bae Ceredigion Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) pub of the year 2023.

Everyone is warmly invited to the presentation of the award to publicans Angharad Hywel and Paul Jacobs in the pub at 6pm on Friday 10 March.

The Ship and Castle, Aberystwyth was runner-up and the Bottle & Barrel, also in Aberystwyth, came third.

The Rhos yr Hafod will now go up against the winning pubs from Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire in the competition for CAMRA West Wales pub of the year.

Many thanks to all local CAMRA members who voted in our survey to shortlist the finalists and to the judges who visited the shortlisted pubs to evaluate them against CAMRA’s pub of the year criteria.

Local CAMRA members nominate pubs for this award and then judges visit the shortlisted pubs anonymously to evaluate each one against CAMRA’s pub of the year criteria.

The quality of the real ale is the most important single factor, but judges also look at how well beer is promoted, the role a pub plays in its local community, the atmosphere, décor and welcome.

Winner: Rhos yr Hafod

This is the third time that the Rhos yr Hafod has won the Bae Ceredigion CAMRA pub of the award which is an outstanding achievement for a small pub in a rural location.

The award recognises the commitment that publicans Angharad Hywel and Paul Jacobs put into running a pub that focusses on its local community and the quality of its real ale offer.

Visitors and locals are greeted at the Rhos yr Hafod with a friendly bi-lingual welcome and can choose from two constantly changing real ales. These usually come from Welsh breweries and are always served in excellent condition.

Angharad is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the beers on offer and a jaunty display of pump clips adorns the bar to promote the barrels waiting in the cellar.

The pub has several drinking areas including a lively front bar, a quieter back bar to relax in, a function room, a large rear garden and a sunny front terrace.

Judges particularly praised the support that the pub gives to and receives from its local community.

It hosts regular board games nights, quizzes, open mic nights, folk music and a summer beer and music festival. It is also the base for a monthly community café which is run by local residents.

Runner-up: Ship and Castle

The Ship and Castle has been the flagship for real ale in Aberystwyth for many years and landlord Ian Blair sources beer from a huge range of different British breweries, some of which are never available elsewhere locally.

The five cask beers include Wye Valley and up to four changing guest ales, one of which is normally a dark style.

Bar staff are knowledgeable about the beer range and offer advice and tasters on request.

The “five pump platter” allows drinkers to sample a third pint measure of each of the cask ales.

This clean and comfortable pub has a choice of seating areas and regulars mingle happily with visitors.

The pub hosts live music and a weekly folk music session, and is a popular and friendly spot to watch Wales’s rugby matches.

Third place: Bottle & Barrel, Aberystwyth

Opened in May 2019 as Aberystwyth’s first micropub, the Bottle & Barrel offers an ever-changing choice of quality keg beers and a couple of cask ales, many of which are produced in Wales.

The range always features different and unusual beer styles and these are clearly promoted on a screen behind the bar.

Owner Zac Marsden has a passion for seeking out new beer and his friendly, knowledgeable team will chat through the different styles and offer tasters.

A beer flight lets you order four smaller measures of the keg and cask beers.

The onsite bottle and can shop sells a huge range of beer and cider to drink on the premises or takeaway, and you can buy take-outs of draught beer.

The décor is contemporary with an attractive slated bar front, a choice of seating from armchairs to high stools, and a small rear courtyard.

Regular events include “meet the brewer”, “tap takeovers” and themed food nights when local businesses supply the food.

We are seeking a part-time cleaner to join our team at Brynarian Caravan Park. This role is perfect for someone who has family or home commitments or who is looking to get out of the house for a couple of hours per week to provide a healthy work-life balance.

Location: Brynarian Caravan Park, Cross Inn, Llanon, SY23 5NA

Hours: 4 hours per week (2 hours on Fridays and 2 hours on Mondays)

Salary: Competitive hourly rate

Responsibilities:
1. Cleaning a modern toilet block:
- Clean and disinfect all floors, showers, sinks & toilets
- Empty bins &replenishing items
- Notifying management of deficiencies/repairs

2. Cleaning caravans prior to sale and communal areas:
- Vacuum, clean & disinfect all floors and surfaces including kitchens & bathrooms
-Dress the beds
-Restock items/ report issues
-Maintain a high level of cleanliness throughout the park & ensure cleaning supplies are stored & used correctly.

Requirements:
-Previous experience in cleaning is preferred but not essential.
-Must be available to work on weekends.
-Reliable and trustworthy with a positive attitude
-Able to work independently
-Excellent time management skillsL
