St Cadoc’s Church, Glamorgan

Discovered under 20 coats of whitewash, the remarkable paintings on a wall at this church in the village of Llancarfan include one depicting two devils urging on some l***y lovers while another pours beer into a red-coated glutton. The seven sins, sprouting from fiery dragon mouths, face a dancing skeleton and a rare Welsh painting of St George (free; stcadocsllancarfan.co.uk). Six miles east, St Illtud’s Church in Llantwit Major is home to several Celtic pillars and crosses. The homely wooden cabins of Hide at St Donats, nearby, have log-burning stoves and hand-woven blankets.
