Finishing work at 10pm has its perks, picnics in the hay field, followed by watching the sunset and then seeing the blood moon as we left 😍 Another field of hay done for this year, 3 left to go IF we get any sort of weather for it 🤦♀️

First generation family run farm in Ceredigion, West Wales Here in the county of Ceridigion, Dolwen has two holiday cottages. A 1 bed and a 2 bed.

It also has it's very own campsite. As the page name suggests this also includes our animals, most of which are really friendly and love a fuss! Both holiday cottages have their own parking and private gardens and are well equipped with the essentials. Both cottages also have their own private hot tub. A perfect way to unwind after a busy day exploring the area. The campsite is registered with The
Camping and Caravanning Club and is a Certificated Site (CS). Our campsite occupies a tranquil spot at the side of our smallholding overlooking fields and hills. It is located in a very private position with it's own entrance. The camp area is on grass, where we have 5 large mowed pitches amongst wildflower areas to make each one that bit more private. There are no electric hook ups available and is for tents and caravans. There is however, battery charging facilities available on request depending on availability. The site is fully equipped with drinking water and a sink with washing facilities. There is a flushing toilet, hot water shower and a chemical toilet disposal point. Pets are welcome on this site free of charge, complete with dog walking route.

Well we are all exhausted after the show today 😴 Lula got 1st in her egg and spoon and 1st in the obstacle course race which she is chuffed to bits about 🥰 We didn't fair well in the tent again today though as there were lots of strong entries 😔 Even Harry the scarecrow wasn't enough to grab us a 1st 😭
Onwards and upwards and hoping the weather holds one more day so we can get out and bale tomorrow 🤞😁

As we sat having breakfast this morning we came up with a plan of all the things we wanted to achieve today.
Not going to lie we did not factor in a blow out in the tractor 🤦♀️ yep Joel broke something else 🤣
After getting new tyres on the front fitted we could carry on and get the new trough fitted for the sheep and horses as planned, obviously the horses had to help 🙄 Barbie did a great job with the hammer and Lula found it hilarious her waving it around 🤣

This is going to be a long one, so please bare with me and I promise I'm not high, my mind just works in mysterious ways 😅🤣
So the other week I watched a video Gareth Wyn Jones had shared about the lack of insects and butterflies this year and the possible reasons behind this.
This week we have been in our fields that still need to be mown for hay, whilst having a walk round them there were butterflies, moths, grasshoppers, caterpillars, spiders and the list really does go on and on including insects I have never even seen before, it was as much of a schoolday for me as it was Lula!
This got me thinking about when people would traditionally make hay, this was the whole reason behind the 6 week school holidays where all the children would be out on the farm in the fields helping to get all the harvest in. We are mowing increasingly earlier in the year domestically and agriculturally due to the ever changing weather patterns and having to make the most of whatever dry spells we get even if it is earlier than we traditionally would have.
What impact does that then have on the nature that use those gardens/flower meadows for early habitat?
So then I start questioning the weather patterns, is any one actually still with me? 🤣
Who has watched BBC's Worzel Gummidge with Mackenzie Crook in? If you haven't get on Iplayer and watch it, it's bloody brilliant. Anyway, in the 1st episode the seasons are locked and it's the scarecrows that have to come together to unlock the seasons so the farmer can get his harvest in.
What happened to the farmers and their children building a scarecrow for their fields?
Who still has a traditional scarecrow guarding their fields?
Why has everything got to progress so far that all the magic in the world is lost?
Bet you can't guess what we are making this week 🤪
Please spare me the politics and conspiracy theories I am just sharing with you all what I shared with Joel at 7.30 this morning when he had just woke up 🤣🤣

Today was show day and we have spent the week getting our entries ready. Lula has been baking, painting, drawing and crafting creating some great pieces of art work. She was so happy to have come first in one of her classes 😍 We didn't do so well in the vegetables this time but we have another shot next week at a different show so who knows, there's still hope 🤣

The spanners are out again 🤦♀️ they say bad luck comes in 3's.....I feel all our bad luck is coming at once or Joel has been cursed because we have to be approaching 9 now 🤣🤦♀️
Pumpkin however is loving life right now as he has been reunited with his hay stack and this is where he will stay for the foreseeable 😍

Another late night for us here but this time for fun 😁
We headed to the local village sports day where we all took part in running races, egg and spoon races and sack races, Joel refused to do the three legged race with me at this one though 🤣
He then got roped into one of the rounders teams this evening and they only went and got 1st 👏 Joel also gained his 2nd black eye of the week after a spectacular dive for the ball 🤣 That wasn't the only time he hit the deck today, here's his sack race 🤣

We brought all the kit back home today, that meant i had to drive on the roads in the tractor with an implement for the first time😬
Having Lula sat next to me saying "I dont think much to your tractor skills compared to dads" and getting there to Joel saying "you do realise there's a tortoise (slow) and a rabbit (fast) mode don't you as you seemed to be going really slow" really boosted my confidence for the way home 🤦♀️🙄
I however think I did a pretty good job and the kit got back unscathed, what more do they want from me 🤣
We then got all the bales back home and in the barn just before the heavens really opened 🥳

Yesterday was a long day but finally at 11pm with the hay shed filling and every vehicle/trailer buried in hay (not the conventional way but hey needs must 🤣) all the hay we baled yesterday was finally undercover 🥵😴
We still have 2 fields down to bale and cart today....after unloading yesterday's hay that is 🙈
We will see you on the other side....hopefully 🤞

One man went to mow, went to mow a meadow, one man and his Lula, went to mow a meadow 🤣
We have been checking the weather constantly these past few weeks and today we bit the bullet and have mowed half of this years hay fields. Its safe to say we will no longer be checking the weather for fear of what we may see 😬 If everyone can refrain from singing for the next 5 days it would be greatly appreciated 🤣 We are now off to cross our fingers and pray for sun 🌞

Its been a busy day today bringing all the sheep home ready for shearing 🐑 Half got done today including the fattest sheep ever 🤣🤣 The rest will get done this weekend, the wool went straight into the polytunnel as weed/pest control and fertiliser, it was 36⁰ in there so I could only do two fleeces before coming out to cool off for 10 minutes 🥵🤣
We then snuck off for a beach dinner to reward ourselves 🤤

Another year, another great day at The Royal Welsh 😁 I also found Joel the perfect hoodie 🤣
Now it's time to get prepped and ready to make some hay as next week is looking like a scorcher 🌞🎉
Long week ahead but hopefully we can squeeze in a couple of beach trips too as who knows when we will get the sun again 🤞

It's been a beautiful day here today so we snuck off this morning for some family time at the beach ⛱️ 😎 After lunch out it was time to get stuck into some jobs. We have a couple of fields that have been seriously neglected so things like ragwort and himilayan balsam have crept in to those areas. We are gradually working our way round these areas so it doesnt spread any futher hand pulling it all out. We went and pulled some ragwort out of one area this afternoon, whilst Lula went bug hunting 🐛🐞🦗🕷 Mission complete and we have one more area to finish and the ragwort will be gone completely for this year 🍾 It will be a while before we can same the same for the Himalayan 🙈

It's always dangerous leaving Joel unattended......this time it resulted in a boat arriving, not just a small dingy type boat but a full on boat 🤦♀️
Now to turn this into a playhouse/pirate ship for Lula, like we having nothing else to be doing 🤣🤦♀️

A different kind of building project for us today, its a constant juggling act for us between, farm work, home schooling, day to day jobs, paperwork and all the other bits inbetween.
This week we decided we would try and create lula abit of an outdoor play area for when summer finally arrives. Stage 1 is complete, it only took us an hour and divorce didn't get mentioned once 🤣💪

Today was the village carnival so we have had a great day doing egg and spoon races, three legged races, sack races and the list goes on. Lula won 3rd in the sack race and Joel came 3rd in his running race 👏
We then had a couple of hours free before the evening entertainment so we snuck off to top a field and pull out some Himalayan balsam before heading back for the children's entertainment 😁
Another late night but some great memories made ♥️ I still pinch myself that this is actually our life 🥰

You'll never guess what guys......we have actually been on holiday 😳
For the first time since moving to Wales we managed to leave the farm for a whole week, i know a week!!! With help from some good friends who moved into the farm to look after everyone for us we headed to Dartmouth for our honeymoon 🥰
We had a lovely time away but we're so ready to get home and meet this little beauty who arrived whilst we were away 🙄
Let us introduce you to Rosie 🥰 Lottie foaled overnight with no one around and had everything under control when our friends went out one morning. She was then brought into the stable to make it easier to keep an eye on her. Now we are back home she has been given freedom and is back out in the field burning off all that energy so mum can get a break 🤣 for anyone who likes a Lula tale make sure you put the sound on 🤣🤣

Sorry we have been so quiet on here of late but we have been busy playing catch up on this year as we have been so behind on the farm given the constant rain we were having and being unable to get stuff done 🙄
We have also been busy trying to prep for our wedding on the farm that is in less than 3 weeks 😳 To say it's been hectic is an understatement 🤣
The pigs are certainly loving the weather though and we are the lunatics now watering the pig pen to keep it wet so they can wallow 🫠

When your meant to be having a belated birthday lunch at The Belle but Lula ends up in A and E at 4am 🤦♀️
Luckily for me they are amazing and let us have a takeaway roast so I still got my belated birthday lunch and we will just have to book to go again when Lulas feeling better 😝

Its been a beautiful day today with blue skies and sunshine 🌞
Lambing 2024 is officially over with our last ewe lambing this morning 😁🥳
Most of our ewes and lambs are now out on grass and loving life 🥰❤️
And Johnny boy has finally had his rug off to have a good roll, I had started to forget what colour he was after seeing nothing but his head for months 🤣

Please keep your dogs on leads around livestock and especially at this time of year folks.
Our dogs are around livestock daily but if we are ever in unfamiliar territory or around other peoples livestock all our dogs are on leads, they are animals, they are unpredictable and why would we put our dogs life in danger!
A farmers job is hard enough during lambing and especially this year given the appalling weather without the added stress of dogs chasing their sheep 🐑 No farmer wants to hurt an animal but they will do anything to protect theirs!!
Please think and act responsibly, if not for yourself, for your dog 🙏

Today has officially tipped us over the halfway mark in our 2024 lambing 🥳
So far we have had highs, we have had lows, we have had a trip to A and E, we have had a second midnight trip to the vets, we have had arguments, we have had laughter and we have had more brews than i can remember but we are still smiling 🤣
Let's hope the second half is a smoother ride although it's looking like it's going to be a long busy night ahead after being up since half 3 with 3 more looking ready to pop anytime 😳

It's suddenly got wild here in the last few hours, really picked up 💨 Everyone we can possibly get in is in, sheep all checked on and they've hunkered themselves down. All the kit is away and just hope it passes without incident now🫣
We would like to wish everyone that follows our page a Very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. We will be quiet over the festive period whilst we take time to enjoy the festivities with family and friends 🥰 We have managed to achieve our goal of having the colts at the other land before Christmas and they travelled really well and are enjoying having lots of space to run and play 🥰 Here's Lula signing off the year with her great video skills 🤣🤣 The ponies are in there I promise 🤣
With Winter approaching it's much easier for us and nicer for the animals to be in and dry. Today was pig move day, Lula has been honing her media skills 😍
The ewe lambs moved up to the new land yesterday to enjoy some fresh grass, it sure is quiet around the yard without them here 🤣
Today was Nev's turn to head over to meet his ladies, after him standing on my foot and legging me up in the yard the rest of the move went smoothly 🤣 luckily Lula missed the fall but she did video us walking him up the field, its a steep hill for little legs😍 He clearly knows what his job is as an hour later 2 ewes were already marked 🐑
Life is so much easier when you have the best team 🥰😍
Who else loves a thunderstorm? I could watch this all night 🌙 ⛈️
The campsite is now closed which means we have lots of happy animals as everyone has been moved around on to fresh fields. Lots of fresh yummy grass all round 🤤 We then spent the afternoon harrowing some of the fields that are now empty and started pulling some more nettles to tidy them up 💪
After a morning at the horse sale (no new purchases this month I'm afraid) we got the pigs out of the pig sty and into their paddock 😆 they are so happy to be out and roaming free and we just love to see it even though we will soon be cursing them for the mess they will make 🤣 Barbie and Penny are happy with their new companions 🥰 Honestly this mare is pure gold 😍
So we did it, both fields are cut 😬 Look at the great fly by I got whilst watching them mow, Lula and Joel both missed it fly straight over them 🙄 Glad I got the video or they'd have thought I was making it up! The red kites were also straight over to get themselves an easy meal 😲
After a morning of doing jobs we decided to head out for the afternoon to the local show 😁 its completely mesmerising watching a shepherd with his dog working a group of sheep 🐑 we have all on getting one of our dogs to sit on command 🤣🤣
Its a brew in bed for us this morning after a long night shift 😴 Barbie had a beautiful filly foal around 10pm lastnight 🥳🥳 With Sarah Belton on speed dial for guidance/assistance if needed we started watching as she went into labour. It was a big foal so Joel gave her a helping hand to get it out, we then stayed up till midnight to make sure she had figured out how to get her milk and Barbie was happy and settled then checked everything was ok every couple of hours via cctv so we didnt disturb them. Another first for us and what a magical moment to be a part of. Mum and baby are doing great and Lula is super excited to meet her new baby this morning 🐴
Today was the warmest of the year so far here in Ceredigion, glorious sunshine and pushing 20 😃 It was also Sadwrn Barlys/ Barley Saturday in Cardigan. The highlight being a parade of Satllions 🐴 through the town centre followed by vintage tractors and cars. We got great food from independent shops, Lula got her face painted and we watched the parade with ice creams in hand, a great day and one we would definitely recommend in the future for any guests 😃
Lovely new resident Jonny Boy has arrived today, once he's settled in he'll be only too happy to meet anyone staying on the farm (and beg a treat 🙄) He'll be Mairi's new steed as she's been horseless since 2020! Hopefully Jonny and Barbie will get on and ride out together 😃 We'll get some photos tomorrow when he's calmed down and ready for a fuss 😁 🐴
