艺予讲解｜Tate Modern: Painting with White

伦敦泰特现代美术馆Tate Modern的常设展览中，有一个满目白色的展厅，总是让参观者摸不着头脑；甚至因为缺乏多彩的视觉刺激，常被人们当作过渡空间，匆匆略过。然而，在这个名为Painting With White的主题展厅里，那些使用白色材料进行创作的作品，是艺术家通过不同介质的试验，去展现对艺术本体性的精彩思考。

20世纪初，随着抽象艺术和观念艺术的兴起，艺术家们开始尝试使用单一颜色进行创作，以求突破表现手法的局限，获得更大的表达自由。在Tate Modern的这个展厅里，我们可以看到，正是因为红、黄、蓝的退场，艺术家得以更加关注创作语言本身的变幻及更多的可能性：

艺术家以严谨的黄金比例构图，结合光影布置出了螺旋形的雕塑绘画，试图用形状来代替颜色，重新聚焦于感知的本质。这些作品深入发掘白色承载的精神指涉，在不同文化背景中连接起无界的意蕴。

通过这些作品，我们看到艺术家利用白色作为一种“非颜色”，开辟出了表面之外新的维度，将创作语言提炼为关乎感知与存在的本质：白色不再仅是具体的物质形态，而是通向更为宽广的意识空间。

艺予推荐｜致敬🫡大师Antony Gormley

安东尼·葛姆雷因其研究人体与空间关系的雕塑、装置和公共艺术作品而广受赞誉。葛姆雷将艺术视为一个可以产生新行为、新思想和新感受的地方，他的作品关注人的体验以及对活着的感觉的表达。对他来说，艺术可以成为一个我们可以集体思考我们作为未来创造者的角色的地方：“我希望它是关于生活的，我希望它与潜力有关”。

受到约瑟夫·博伊斯（Joseph Beuys）将艺术视为变革性社会过程的广泛观念的影响，葛姆雷使用自己的身体作为直接的“生活参考”。从 20 世纪 80 年代开始，他开始用石膏塑造自己的身体，制作雕塑，实现了他所说的“在物质中捕捉到的人类时间的体现时刻”。20世纪90年代，葛姆雷创作了他现在标志性的铸铁身体形态系列，包括主要装置《临界质量 II》（1995），其中 60 种身体形态表达了 12 种不同的物理状态。

Amazing Rock Crystal Ewer at V&A Jameel Gallery

This rare ewer was carved from a single piece of the extremely hard, transparent stone known as rock crystal. On either side a bird of prey attacks an antelope. The image may have symbolised the ruler's ability to overcome his enemies. Such high-quality rock crystal vessels were made for the rulers of Cairo during the Fatimid period (969-1171).

Lenore Tawney, The Queen 1962

Lenore Tawney was an American artist known for her drawings, personal collages, and sculptural assemblages, who became an influential figure in the development of fiber art.

Tawney created her large, free-hanging works using ‘open-warp’ weaving techniques. This leaves some of the warp threads uncovered, creating vertical slits. The finished work is not densely woven like a traditional textile. It is transparent and hangs away from the wall. The Queen is from a group of weavings that Tawney first exhibited at the Staten Island Museum, New York, in 1962. The weavings were named by the artist Agnes Martin, who wrote a statement for the exhibition’s leaflet.

Lucas Cranach the Elder, (1472-1553), Adam and Eve, 1526, The Courtauld, London (Samuel Courtauld Trust) © The Courtauld

Adam and Eve are depicted at the fateful moment when they disobey God and commit the first sin. The story is taken from the Bible: the Devil in the form of a serpent coiling down the branches encourages Eve to pick a fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, the only tree in the Garden of Eden that God has forbidden them to touch. Having bitten the fruit, Eve hands it to Adam. Although Lucas Cranach has represented him hesitant and seemingly bewildered, Adam will soon also taste it and the couple will be banished in punishment.

Cranach and his workshop made over 50 versions of this subject. This painting is one of the largest and most beautiful. Its seductive depiction of n**e figures in a luxurious natural setting heightens the theme of temptation, central to this biblical story. However, the theme of redemption is also included. The vine, laden with grapes and spiralling up the tree, counters the serpent above. Wine is a traditional symbol of the blood shed by Christ, who will absolve humanity with his Crucifixion.

Roman Empire, The Wolfson Gallery at The British Museum

The objects in Room 70 illustrate the rise of Rome from a small town to an imperial capital that controlled the Mediterranean basin and north-western Europe and the Near East, extending from Scotland to Syria.

Objects on display come from all over the empire, reflecting both its vast scale and its diverse geographical, cultural and ethnic nature. They range from stone and metal sculptures of emperors and gods to jewellery, silverware, pottery and glass, including the famous cameo glass Portland Vase.

Babel, 2001, Cildo Meireles.

Babel 2001 is a large-scale sculptural installation that takes the form of a circular tower made from hundreds of second-hand analogue radios that the artist has stacked in layers. The radios are tuned to a multitude of different stations and are adjusted to the minimum volume at which they are audible. Nevertheless, they compete with each other and create a cacophony of low, continuous sound, resulting in inaccessible information, voices or music.

Untitled comprises two upright wooden posts that hold four cross bars loosely wrapped with wool. Some of the wool is dyed in delicate shades of light blue. While the wool appears uncarded and untamed, it has been arranged on the cross bars in such a way as to suggest a harmonious coming together of a natural material and human work. The work is displayed leaning at an angle against a wall.

Experience the feel of a Victorian exhibition, with artworks from 1840–1890 at Tate Britain

The artworks in Room 7 were made while Queen Victoria was on the throne. It displays paintings by artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. They were a group of artists who disagreed with the way the Royal Academy taught art. Their paintings aim to be as realistic as possible.

There are also several works by British impressionist painters. Quick brush strokes, focusing on light and painting outside were important to these artists.

Victoria’s reign saw dramatic changes in British society. The Industrial Revolution led to machines being used in factories. This radically changed the way people lived their lives. Politics and culture, including art, were impacted by these changes.

I have never had a studio, and I do not understand shutting oneself up in a room. To draw, yes; to paint, no.

Irises were among Monet’s favourite flowers, and he cultivated many different species, planting them in both his flower garden and his water garden. This is one of approximately 20 views or irises surrounding the banks of the lily pond that Monet painted around 1914–17. It is as though we are standing on the Japanese bridge and looking down at the winding path bordered by flowers.
