Paddling past non contacted communities in the Amazon.. ๐
Today marks Stage 4 of the Amazon Challenge and on this stage we paddle past the Mascho Piro reserve, home to some of the last non contacted communities in the world.
It also means that teams are unable to stop between the marked points on their maps, and must keep to the right hand side of the river whenever possible.
Why?
The Mascho Piro have been living in isolation for hundreds of years. Their are strict rules in place by the Ministry of Culture here in Peru and outsiders are not allowed to enter.
This is for both the safety of the teams (there have been cases of deaths and conflict in the past) and to protect the community from modern diseases that they have no natural immunity to.
..
Want to learn more about the Mascho Piro?
..
Join us in 2025 for the Challenge and navigate through the remote Amazon by Traditional Canoe or SUP. Visit our website for more.

Non Contacted Communities in the Amazon ๐
Manu is home to the Mascho Piro non contacted communities, and they are sometimes spotted on the beaches here.
They are part of the same ethnic group as the Yine people, and share a similar language to other communities along the Madre de Dios river.
The Mascho Piro have little contact with the outside world, and any interaction is closely regulated by the Ministry of Culture here in Peru.
On this section of the Amazon Challenge, there is strictly no stopping allowed as we paddle past the Mascho Piro reserve here in the Amazon.
They are semi nomadic, and occupy a large territory that neighbors the community of Shipitiari. Although not oftern seen, periods of increased contact (and occasional conflict) do happen over time.
As with many non contacted communities, there is much discussion on how to best ensure both their safety, for example from diseases that they have no immunity to, and to the safety of others in the surrounding communities.
These communities have daily patrols to monitor any incursions, based at the community outpost where we spent the evening. It definitely made for an interesting night sleep!
What do you think the future holds for the Mascho Piro? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Jungle Rot & Illegal Mining ๐
It's not always easy travelling in the Amazon and today we found out why...
Jungle Rot ๐
...
This is a common fungal infection that comes from a combination of a humid environment and constantly wet feet ๐ณ
It's important to keep your feet dry while paddling to avoid this painful infection while taking on the Challenge!
Illegal Mining ๐
...
On the last days of the Amazon Canoe Challenge, we paddle through areas where it's common to see Illegal gold mining.
It's a huge problem here and a leading cause of deforestation in this area. You will see these make shift mines everywhere in the Madre de Dios region.
Worldwide, it's estimated that 20% of gold globally comes from mines like this one.
Let us know what you think of today's adventure in the comments and check back tomorrow for the last day of the 2023 #amazoncanoechallenge

After that, the teams are well and truly on their own as they head out with their canoes into the unknown.
Today's stage brings with it some tricky rapids as well as the first checkpoint at an indigenous community.

For when you're in a rush, there is nothing like zipping along the river on a peke peke.
These small motorized boats are fast, and have replaced traditional canoes in many parts of the Amazon. Distances are usually large, so it makes sense to have motorized transport to speed things up a bit.
Our crew uses peke pekes as our support vessels along the river, so you'll see us stationed along the course keeping an eye on things. These vessels are managed by our partner communities, who are masters at maneuvering them around any sort of obstacle or rapid.
When they aren't looking out for our teams on the river, these peke pekes function as local transport between the communities on the river, or to carry supplies.
