Ah, Thanksgiving! That curious American tradition where gratitude meets turkey and pies get their own category. While it’s not something we typically celebrate on this side of the pond (we save our feasting enthusiasm for Christmas pud and mince pies), we can certainly get behind the idea of taking a moment to appreciate the good stuff in life.
As a small group tour operator, we’ve got plenty to be thankful for, not least the joy of showing off Britain’s hidden treasures and our glorious countryside.
Speaking of countryside, check out the Cherhill White Horse. For those unfamiliar, it’s a massive chalk figure of a horse etched into a Wiltshire hillside, standing proudly as if to say, "Yes, I am this majestic, and no, you can’t ride me." At over 200 years old, it’s not just a stunning landmark but also a testament to British eccentricity. Who else would look at a perfectly good hill and think, You know what this needs? A horse.
On our tours, we love to seek out and point out eccentricities like this in our country. They’re a reminder of the quirky, timeless charm of this island we call home.
So, to all our American friends celebrating Thanksgiving this week, we raise a metaphorical glass of mulled cider to you. May your turkey be juicy, your pumpkin pie plentiful, and the arguments kept to a minimum.
And for everyone else, let’s take a leaf out of their book (though perhaps not the one about candied yams) and remember to be thankful for the good moments, the stunning landscapes, and the small joys that make life such a grand adventure.
From all of us at The English Bus, cheers! Or as the Cherhill Horse might put it: “Neigh.”
