Here’s a shot from last years ballet shoot at the ENB. At one point in the afternoon the sun was streaming though a window and we just had use that light. Exposing for the highlights and letting the shadows be deliberately underexposed gave us this dramatic image.

A shot from last year’s ballet shoot at the home of the ENB. This is one of our dancers, Adam, shot using a single Profoto B1 to freeze him mid air.

It’s always a super enjoyable experience to shoot precessional dancers. Their stamina, strength, flexibility and skills are mind blowing. And so is their patience!

Capturing the perfect pose mid flight requires excellent timing and also perseverance and is really satisfying when you nail it.

Three fundamental techniques are shown in this shot that will help you take better portraits.

1. Look for a directional light source like the window in this shot. Explore how it falls on someone’s face when you change their position and your perspective.

2. Correctly expose of the bright part of the person’s face. Let the shadows be shadows.

3. Find something to shoot through to add depth to the shot.

This is Jevan, shot on our last portrait photography workshop using one off camera flash to the left of camera.

A simple process for getting both flash and ambient exposure correct is to first get the exposure of the overall scene correct in camera (M mode) and forget about the flash for now, accept that your subject may be underexposed. Once you’re happy with the ambient exposure, don’t change any camera settings but add in the flash and adjust the flash power until it gives you the exposure you want.

There is no right or wrong with exposure. It’s just how bright or dark you want specific parts of the shot to be. Usually you want the face to be well lit but you can let other parts of the shot be dark or bright to suit your creative vision.

It’s one of many great shots we got. Always good to have the time and space to try new things and break some ‘rules’ like in this shot where we used a wide angle, shot from below and had a strong light source behind the person.

Just back from Valencia. Whilst the main focus of the trip was to photograph architecture we happened to be there during Fallas. It’s a traditional celebration held annually in commemoration of Saint Joseph. It’s a noisy, busy, fun and entertaining spectacle involving fireworks at all times of day, traditional dress, marching, drumming and food. This bunch of people were marching and drumming their way into the city and obviously loving it.

Early last year my trust Nikon DSLR passed the 150,000 shutter count mark and I made the move to mirrorless.

After 12 months of intensive shooting, here are my thoughts on the comparisons between DSLR cameras and mirrorless cameras.

I've just returned from a trip to India where I was lucky enough to visit Amritsar and the Golden Temple which is the sacred place of the Sikhs.⁠

At the time of my visit it was Vaisakhi, the festival which celebrates the founding of the Sikh community, the Khalsa, in 1699.⁠

This was an incredible thing to see, and also one of the most welcoming and friendly places I've ever been to.⁠
