With great regret we announce the passing of Doug Scott CBE.
Most famous for being the first Briton to climb Mount Everest. In 1975 he topped out on Everest with Dougal Haston having made the first ascent of the South West face. He survived an unplanned bivi just below the summit without oxygen or sleeping bag.
Hailing from Nottingham, Doug was a rock climber and big wall climber before he went onto to be one of the main players in the Bonington Expedition generation of the 1970's. Moving away from the larger siege style expeditions he was a pioneer in the small team Himalayan Alpine Style ascents.
With ascents of Kangchenjunga, Nuptse, Shivling and Shisapangma he became one of the greatest Himalayan mountaineers of all time. After climbing the Ogre with Sir Chris Bonington an abseiling error led to Doug breaking both his legs whilst still being quite close to the summit. What followed was an epic crawl of survival with Bonington, Mo Anthoine and Clive Rowland down the mountain and across the glacier.
What Doug should be remembered for most is his work with the local people of Nepal. Founding Community Action Nepal and setting up 15 schools, 20 health posts, 3 porter rescue centres and numerous community buildings.
Doug has left a legacy behind him. Rest in Peace.
