Caerphilly Castle, South Wales. What an amazing fortress. Bear in mind, that I live near Windsor Castle, so I am particularly hard to impress. This is arguably the second largest Castle in the UK after Windsor (there are other claimants to this, such as Dover Castle). This castle was established in 1268 and you can see that this would have been a truly intimidating fortress when your main way of attacking a castle was with siege weapons like the ones in the first picture, however, by the English Civil War (yes, this reached Wales too) we had gunpowder, which you can see in the second photo has left the south east tower to lean at a more acute angle than the Tower of Pisa!

This may be the last time I see the Windsor Totem Pole, Virginia Water, Windsor Great Park. This Totem Pole was carved in the style of the Kwakiutl tribe of British Columbia, Canada in 1958, to celebrate 100 years of BC being a Crown Province. It has now reached the end of its natural life and will be taken down. In fact it was due to be taken down last year but it was delayed for technical reasons. It will be removed soon and laid to rest and naturally degrade, as is the traditional way to dispose of totem poles.

Windsor Christmas Lights.

The Brooklands Museum. Home to the world’s first speed race track, and the UK’s first Grand Prix. This became an important centre for motoring and aviation. Today it is a fantastic museum where you can see all sorts of amazing motoring and air vehicles including concord. Well worth the trip down to Weybridge, near Hampton Court.

Guiding in the wonderful City of London today. This is the oldest part of London, even with its shiny contemporary architecture everywhere the streets are still based on the medieval structure so you don’t get great wide boulevards giving wonderful vistas like you will in cities like Paris, but what is does mean is you get beautiful vignettes like this view of St Paul’s Cathedral here.

This haunting figure pondering his reflection in the flooded crypt of Wi******er Cathedral is “Sound 2” by Anthony Gormley. Gormley is most famous for the Angel of the North, near Newcastle. His sculptures are often, like this, made from a cast of his own body. The Crypt of Wi******er Cathedral floods almost all the time, due to the water table on which it’s built. Despite this, the cathedral has stood for almost 950 years!

Beautiful knitted Post Box topper spotted in the small town of Tring, Hertfordshire. The flowers in this pattern are red poppies, the national symbol of remembrance for those lost in war. We will see these everywhere for the next couple of weeks as we approach Remembrance Day. Also look at this beautiful old pillar box. Notice the Royal Cypher “VR”, this stands for “Victoria Regina” so this was made under the reign of Queen Victoria.
