A frontier town dealing in gold, ivory and spices on the banks of the Nile, Aswan has cemented its status as one of Egypt's most important cities. It became even more legendary in the 1930s, when Agatha Christie stayed at the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract to pen large parts of her bestseller Death on the Nile. The hotel is a landmark in itself, first built by travel guru Thomas Cook in 1899 as a Victorian palace to house early European travellers.⁠

One of the most marvellous displays of Mughal architecture anywhere on the planet, Fatehpur Sikri was once a huge fortified ancient city ruled by Emperor Akbar. Its amber-hued mosque is still in use today and while the city is a ghost if its former glory, its architectural ambition rivals anything else in India, including the Taj Mahal.⁠

A sleepy fishing village on Jamaica's north-eastern coast, Port Antonio has been wonderfully untouched by tourism. Once a key outpost for the 19th-century banana business, the town's Georgian houses is a legacy of its former trading prowess and this faded architectural glamour mixes with its local markets, heady street life and the platinum-blonde beaches of Frenchman's Cove – the latter's sands so good they drew the likes of Errol Flynn in the 1940s.
