Pushing the boundaries of print 💫

Did you see Carol He’s installation ‘Catch a fleeting show’ at WCPF24?

RCA graduate Carol He’s work focuses on the digital landscape and the question: how can we reflect on human-technological relations?

Rapid changes in media create an environment where images and information are quickly produced and shared, leading to attention deficit disorder. What is the ‘overwhelm’ we experience when immersed in screens, and how does this increase our sense of loss and uncertainty? Can we interrupt the flow of media? Can intensive material engagement reshape our attention and slow down the acceleration?

We loved having back at the Fair for 2024 💥

Founded by art critic and comedian Verity Babbs during the first lockdown, Art Laughs began as a series of interviews where comedians discussed an artwork of their choice. This unique initiative combines comedy with the arts, bringing laughter and fresh perspectives to arts and heritage spaces.

Pushing the boundaries of print 💫

Did you catch Zac Eastwood-Bloom’s installation ‘Simulacra’ (2023) at the Fair last month?

Zac studied ceramics at Edinburgh College of Art before going to study for a master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in London. Whilst studying at the RCA he began to explore the use of digital technologies in relation to a broad range of materials to begin to develop a way of using sculpture and drawing to understand the world.

The series was born from a research project exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning trained on 3D-Scan data of classical sculpture. The works were originally exhibited at Cambridge University’s Museum of Classical Archeology (.cambridge).

The Young London Print Prize is a pioneering visual arts programme themed around the idea of climate art. All the work is created, judged and curated by young people, with no adult decision-making.

The beautiful, intricate winning entry by Pema Sherpa from Foxfield Primary School depicts the ocean floor and forest. Entitled ‘Fading Hope’, it suggests how humanity has devalued and eroded nature. Her artwork was made using a layered block printing technique.

Second prize went to Muiz Mustafa from Shepherds Bush for his bold campaigning artwork called ‘No Fly Zone’ that harks back to a tradition of radical political posters.

Third prize was awarded to Emma Tasnim from Whitechapel for her blue monoprint of a single bird, called ‘Mystic Blues, a Puffin’s Hues’, capturing the whimsical beauty of wildlife.

The winning artists were exhibited alongside some of Britain’s best contemporary artists at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in November 💫

✨ Prizewinning Artists ✨

Karen Edwards was awarded the inaugural Sonsoles Print Studio Prize at WCPF 💥

Karen is a recent graduate from the Royal Drawing School’s Online Drawing Development Year (ODDY23). Her practice is primarily focussed on drawing en plein air, inspired by the beautiful East Sussex countryside, its ancient woodland and organic forms in gardens such as Great Dixter where she is a volunteer. When back in the studio, drawings may be developed into short limited editions of 8-12 prints, normally linocuts which are hand printed at home. She enjoys various types of printmaking, including etching, collagraph techniques and pushing the boundaries of relief-printmaking. Karen has recently returned from a print residency at Dumfries House in Ayrshire which was supported by the Royal Drawing School and the King’s Foundation.

Karen was thrilled to hear about receiving Sonsoles Print Studio’s first print prize: ;I’m truly honoured and thrilled to receive the award for ‘Sky over Skye’, following the inspiring and spectacular Woolwich show. It’s a timely opportunity in terms of where I’m at as an emerging artist and I’m excited about exploring the medium with the Sonsoles team in the new year.’

Pushing the boundaries of print 💫

Natalia Mustafá presented a solo booth at WCPF24 as part of the inaugural Woolwich Contemporary Artist Award, which is presented to an RCA MA Printmaking student.

Natalia’s practice explores contemporary perspectives on the tactile, color, sound, and scale, often reflecting on the complex relationship between the body and the machine. With a particular focus on binaries, language, and materiality, Natalia seeks to uncover new notions of time and space shaped by the overwhelming presence of technology in a post-internet context.

A message from WCPF Directors Jack Bullen and Lizzie Glendinning 💫

It has been our absolute pleasure to welcome old friends and new faces to experience Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, and our associated events and projects this past year.

While the Fair was initially established as an exhibition to champion the best in original contemporary print, it has evolved to become an immersive and experiential central platform to showcase and celebrate our wider year-round organisational projects and partnerships with incredible creatives, collaborators, clients and communities, and deliver much needed social and cultural impact through arts education programmes and our charity arm.

It continues to push the boundaries of print, encourage ambitious and experimental contemporary art exploration, and redefine what print is and what it can do, while nurturing all levels of collectors. And it wouldn’t be possible without all of our Friends, visitors and champions.

Thank you so much for your continued support.

Together with our wonderful team, we wish you a fantastic festive break and a very happy new year!

Jack & Lizzie x

✨ Prizewinning Artists ✨

Did you catch Hugh Hamshaw Thomas’ work at the Fair this year? Hugh’s diptych ‘The Sacred and the Secular. The Measure of Things’ was made in response to his residency at Ushaw House this year as part the Ushaw Residency and Acquisition Prize which he won at WCPF23 alongside fellow printmaker Ade Adesina.

‘Hugh Hamshaw Thomas’ work acknowledges the potential that Christian objects have to embody meaning, and enjoys their poetry, but it also liberates them from their confinement to a traditional context, enabling them to resonate with other such objects on more suggestive grounds.’  -  Andrew Spira

Carolina Laia Jozami, a WCPF24 Panelist and Curator for Whitechapel Gallery and various independent galleries, wrote an amazing piece for Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair on the printmaking experiences from the Global South. The essay can be read on our blog now ✨

Carolina Laia Jozami is an Argentinean curator who works in the Whitechapel Gallery, and as an independent curator. She researches the reconstruction of ephemeral artworks and its relevance. She is interested in researching the role of geographical and time displacements in relation to the making of artworks and their display.
