🪷FAR FROM HOME - CHERISHED AND REMEMBERED🪷

In a beautiful corner of Thailand, Kanchanaburi, home of the Bridge over the River Kwai, the local people still pay their respects to fallen heroes and make their final resting place, thousands of miles from their homes, a cherished garden of peace and beauty. Tending to exotic shrubs and flowers and a place where birds gently sing and add their colours to the scene.

Chungkai was one of the base camps on the Burma-Siam railway and contained a hospital and church built by Allied prisoners of war. The war cemetery is the original burial ground started by the prisoners themselves, and the burials are mostly of men who died at the hospital. There are now 1,426 Commonwealth and 313 Dutch burials of the Second World War in this cemetery.

With stunning scenery and warm, friendly, thankful, local people, its a place to put in any itinerary and remember at any time of the year. I have been many times, my grandfather was imprisoned here and its a place I like to add into bespoke itineraries that I create.

Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning “row of lights.” It marks the triumph of light over darkness, of good over evil. Though Diwali traditions vary according to region and religion, the myths and historical stories behind the holiday share themes of justice and liberation.

Often we travel to destinations where the hype gives us an impression of what to expect and envisage. For me it’s virtually impossible for this diverse and enriching country to be over-hyped or exaggerated. In over 30 trips to India I have never felt underwhelmed. Each visit has offered an absolute explosion for the senses; sights, sounds, colours, smells, heady chaos, serendipitous tranquillity. Its all there in one land that offers something fresh and new on every visit.
