Coming up next month, we present a series of talks on the main phases and themes of the reign of Francis I of France (1494-1547). Over six episodes, Professor Glenn Richardson discusses how Francis understood himself from the outset to be, as ruler, a warrior, governor and patron for his kingdom, even though at birth, he had no direct claim to the throne.

He will also discuss why Francis is regarded by some as a forerunner of Louis XIV, and was renowned in his own right as the great ‘Renaissance monarch’ of France.

Departing this April, our ‘The Venetian Hills’ tour is set in ravishingly beautiful landscapes from vine-clad foothills to the peaks of the Dolomites.

These hill towns are among the loveliest in Italy, including Treviso, Bassano del Grappa and Pieve di Cadore, the birthplace of Titian.

Led by the art historian and lecturer Dr Carlo Corsato, this tour includes several altarpieces and frescoes by Venetian masters, medieval to Rococo.

The base of the tour is Follina, a tiny community which grew up around a monastery in the mountains.

This year marks 250 years since the birth of one of Britain’s greatest painters, JMW Turner. We celebrate the legacy of this most beloved of European landscape and marine artists with a tour in September visiting key Turner sites in London, aiming to seek a closer understanding of the man in the context of his times.

We also commemorate the occasion with a series of online talks with Simon Rees. This series centres on the life, works and travels of Turner through the prism of the Grand Tour, and begins on 20th March.

This year’s Royal Philharmonic Society Awards took place yesterday, 6 March 2025 at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. MRT’s Lizzie Watson and Lucia Di Cicco attended in support of the nominees for the ‘Storytelling’ award, which we sponsored again this year.

The winner of this award went to BBC Radio 3's Classical Africa, in which double-bassist Leon Bosch presented a complex and captivating tapestry of sounds and ideas from a continent whose music is often overlooked. Congratulations, Classical Africa!

From our prints repository this month is a c. 1880 wood engraving that depicts the Roman amphitheatre in El Djem, a town in Mahdia Governorate, Tunisia. The immense ruins of the largest coliseum in North Africa held up to 30,000 spectators and was modelled on the Colosseum in Rome.

Led by Dr Zena Kamash, ‘Ancient and Islamic Tunisia’ which departs in May, visits this town and its small museum nearby containing exquisite mosaics. The week explores the magnificent landscapes of Tunisia and takes in some of the most spectacular ancient Roman sites to be found anywhere.

An exciting addition to our 2026 programme, our ‘Kingdoms of Southern India’ tour delves into the Hindu and Islamic heritage of the Deccan plateau with Dr Peter Webb.

From the medieval to early modern times, this region was the frontier between Muslim powers expanding from the north and the established local Hindu civilisations of the south.

The tour explores the rise and fall of these kingdoms through their substantial architectural remains, many in remote and seldom-visited regions.
