European Cinema and the Short Story
This summer, Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh as well as critic and broadcaster Dr Pasquale Iannone leads a series of richly-illustrated talks on five acknowledged masters of the short story.
From the 19th-century naturalism of Guy de Maupassant to the 1970s gothic of Daphne du Maurier, we will explore the ways in which key works have been adapted for the big screen by a selection of distinctive and revered European filmmakers.
They take place every Thursday from 27th July to 24th August 2023 at 4.30pm (GMT +1) and, including Q&A, will last an hour. They are available for viewing for eight weeks after the last episode is streamed (18th October 2023).

A short snippet from Episode 2 of our lecture series by Professor Lloyd Llewellyn Jones entitled Ivory, Apes, and Peacocks – Luxury, trade and exchange in the ancient world.
Discussed in this episode is the evidence from a rich archive of cuneiform correspondence attesting to a lively trade between Assyria and Anatolia in the middle Bronze Age.

Dr Paul Max Edlin, who leads our ‘Leipzig Mahler Festival’ in May gives a flavour of this rare and wonderful chance to hear all ten of Mahler’s monumental symphonies.
Performed by first-class international orchestras and star conductors – among them the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (Andris Nelsons), Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Myung-Whun Chung) and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla), the concerts are complemented by daily excursions to Dessau and Dresden, as well as guided walks of Leipzig.
Dr Paul Max Edlin has taught in universities for over 30 years, most recently as a professor and then as Director of Music at Queen Mary University of London.
