Our print of the month depicts Bergamo and hails from W.W Collin’s 1911 ‘Cathedrals Cities of Italy’.

‘There is something very fascinating in the quiet and exclusive old city. Its streets are steep and narrow, its houses seem to rake the sky, the rattle of wheels does not often disturb the aristocratic silence..'

We visit Bergamo on several of our Italian tours in 2025, including ‘Gastronomic Lombardy’, ‘Caravaggio’, ‘The Venetian Land Empire’ and more.

You cannot know Spain unless you know Aragón, that former kingdom rich in fine landscape, history and architecture, including Arab works and the Arab-Christian style known as Mudéjar, here at its most extravagant and surprising.

On our tour, ‘Aragón: Hidden Spain’ (7–15 May 2025), we visit this lesser-visited region, on a diverse journey through Paleolithic and Neolithic cave painting, Moorish palaces, Spain’s finest examples of Mudéjar architecture, Romanesque castles and churches.

Goya is well represented; we visit his birthplace and see his Horrors of War.

Our much anticipated ‘Iceland’s Story' tour returns in 2025, exploring that nation’s history through the scenery, sagas and manuscripts.

Iceland’s sagas are its foundation stories. Recorded anonymously in the 13th and 14th centuries, they tell of warrior-farmers, poets, matriarchs and chieftains, all battling to create a new society in the midst of a wilderness. For eight days, they will be our constant companions as we explore Reykjavík, Húsafell and the west coast.

‘Perhaps, as you’ve wandered along the banks of the Danube, or mused over a Roman fresco you’ve found yourself contemplating the individuals who masterminded your MRT tour. Who it was that put you in that place at that time, paired your wine with your dinner and negotiated that out of public hours visit…’

We recently interviewed four members of our Operations team, to learn about their experiences and what it is that drives their interests.

Buckler’s Hard, a charming 18th-century shipbuilding village in the New Forest has a rich history, afforded by its strategic position on the banks of the River Beaulieu.

The land was originally occupied by Cistercian monks in the 13th century. Later, it became a centre for shipbuilding, with timber supplies plentiful from the surrounding New Forest – ships for Nelson’s Navy were built here. From Buckler’s Hard Sir Francis Chichester embarked on his solo circumnavigation of the globe aboard GIpsy Moth IV.

The hamlet is visited by our tour ‘Maritime England’ in late August this year. Click here for more information: https://bit.ly/3JEL72t

Earlier this year, our celebrated ‘Vietnam: History, People, Food’ tour departed to uncover diverse aspects of Vietnamese culture and history, from dynastic kingdoms, colonialism, socialism, ethnology and gastronomy.

Starting in Hanoi, North Vietnam, the group meandered southwards, through Hue, the spiritual centre of Buddhism, via Hoi Ann, finally reaching Ho Chi Minh City, a captivating metropolis and Vietnam’s commercial hub.

A selection of the sights encountered on the tour are shown here (The pagoda and Imperial Citadel at Hue and Halong Bay ) thanks to Hubert Giraud, MRT tour manager.

Four years after the fall of Constantinople (1453), Stefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great) became Prince of Moldavia and for the next fifty years led defence against Turkish invasions. Against this backdrop Stefan and his son, Petru Rares, established almost thirty fortified monasteries and churches deep in the Eastern Carpathians, in present-day Romania.

Adorned with paintings of biblical stories and other Christian themes, these painted monasteries were used to educate and entertain illiterate soldiers. Our tour ‘Moldavia & Transylvania’ visits several of the most vivid examples in May 2025, along with beautiful medieval towns.

The tour is led by Dr Shona Kallestrup. Find out more here: https://bit.ly/43Z821S
