Celebrating Qixi Festival
Today we celebrate Qixi Festival, also known as Chinese Valentine's Day.
This day recognises the romantic legend and ill-fated love affair between Niulang, a cowherd, and a weaver fairy, Zhinü. The couple fell in love, married and had children on Earth but the goddess of heaven, Zhinü's mother, disapproved and banished her daughter back to heaven.
The couple's love was so strong that it touched the Jade Emperor. The Emperor set the terms that Zhinü and Niulang could see each other once a year on the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar year. The romantic legend is now known as Qixi Festival.
