Camino update - 2024

So we never made it any further than . An injury on the final approach to the city meant that when we set out early the next morning (Day 6) we only got 2km before it was clear we had to turn back. These things happen and we had a proper day to explore El Cid's home city (with a great old town) and more time in Madrid the following day.

So Logrono to Burgos was 120km. Both cities were wonderful as were all the stage stops in between - particularly Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Atapuerca.

October was a good time to walk as the Camino was fairly empty of pilgrims and the rolling hills, vineyards and sunflower fields, were very atmospheric. Starting in the dark meant we saw beautiful sunrises around breakfast time. The food was outstanding and as we were walking mainly in we were well watered.

We had a manic last evening in Madrid which was crazily busy compared to everywhere we had been.

Next year the plan is Burgos to Leon...only 500km to Santiago de Compostela

5 days of walking on the Camino de Santiago have seen us go c120km from , across into and the city of .

It was mainly rolling hills with vineyards to start with and it then progressed to sunflower fields, ready for harvest. Stage endings were in Najera (with a beautiful Monastery), Santo Domingo de la Calzada (lovely cathedral complete with chickens), Belorado (distinctive graffiti murals) and Atapuerca, a small quiet village. Here in the cathedral is outstanding in so many ways and it is one of Spain's most historic cities.

Days have generally been dry, warm, cloudy and misty with brilliant sun today. We have eaten some superb food with the highlights being pintxos/tapas in Logrono and lamb in Santo Domingo - both with excellent local wines.

Being late in the season there are not many pilgrims on the road. It is calm and relaxed and everywhere is very friendly.

Two more days to go, with c40km tomorrow, will see us pass a big marker - less than 500km to Santiago de Compostela.

Buen Camino!

If you want to experience the ‘real’ America, then it just has to be the Deep South USA.
It’s a fantastic Fly Drive destination, where you can visit vibrant cities, small American towns, hear great music and eat fantastic food.

There is also a huge amount of history here to learn about, from the native people through to the American Civil War and civil rights movement. There’s something for everyone.

We would love to hear about your dream holiday to America’s Deep South!

Our final stop was on the banks of the . A slightly quieter and smaller city than from a cultural point of view it's got some absolute highlights.

The highly moving (and educational) & brilliantly marries the centuries long struggle for civil rights with the actual spot where Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968.

As a total contrast there is popular culture on max here too. is a great fun with the house itself and a plethora of great Elvis museums. We followed this up with a visit to Sun Studios, a tiny building but one where you stand in the spots where BBKing Jonny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, all made their names. What a back catalogue

We had drinks at the historic diner, and yes, we saw the ducks parading at The Peabody Hotel - madness involving a Duckmaster. Memphis is very famous for BBQ, so we tucked into brilliant ribs and brisket. There was Gus's World Famous Chicken and Beale Street was a calmer version of Nashville's Broadway with soul and R&B blasting out. The city centre was a joy to walk around leafy and fun, and our hotel had a rooftop bar overlooking the . Brilliant sunsets on tap each day.

In short it's a great place and 100% worth visiting there is simply so much to see. For us it was a superb finale to the road trip.

Arriving in from the Smoky Mountains was a bit of a shock - big city, so much noise, so many people.

Broadway itself is fun, loud, and brash all day and night long! Away from there the city was much calmer.

Our great central hotel, , had a brilliant rooftop bar with views over the Cumberland River. We explored the Capitol and beautiful BiCentennial Park. One of the best lunches on the trip was at Monnel's - we shared our table (chicken & pot roast with so, so, much more) with a folk band. Visits to the historic Ryman Auditorium and Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum were punctuated by a superb Bluegrass gig at the Station Inn (Green River R***e) and a wonderful evening at Grand Ole Ophry. A fun set with really varied line up of styles with stars and new faces. Jeanne Sealey has appeared more times than anyone else, Dasha is currently enjoying a huge hit with Austin, and Jamey Johnson has a truly memorable voice. A visit here is a must for the music and whole experience.

We also managed to have the Hot Spicy Chicken that Nashville is famous for, found an accoustic songwriters gig in our hotel bar and even saw the Parthenon! There's tons to see and do - what a fabulous city to visit

We had two days exploring the NP from the two of Gatlinburg. This town was a pretty unique place, right on the edge of the park and a neon wonderland of kitsch stores and activities (and there was a hot rod gathering) - that said we saw a black bear right outside our room, which overlooked the river.

We drove up across the park to Cherokee in North Carolina. The Eastern Band of the Cherokee are based here and the museum shows their history and how their sovereignty works. We saw Elk in the woods and a well preserved mountain farmstead, a replica of one cleared when the National Park was established. The drive was stunning and went up Clingman's Dome (6,643ft), in the mist, 3rd highest peak on Eastern US.

Returning the next day we explored gorgeous Cades Cove. This was an upland valley, with a population of as many as 700 at one time. Some of the farms and cabins remain in situ, it's a really beautiful spot. We saw plenty of turkeys feeding in the fields and a bear up a tree!

As with all National Parks in the US(of whatever size), the information was outstanding and the Park Rangers are a brilliant source of information.

Well thank you that was fun. What a great city.

We packed a lot into a few days with visits to; Fort Sumter (first shots of the Civil war), the epic new International African American Museum, did a guided walk in the historic quarter, saw the Old Slave Market and visited two pretty special mansions - Aitken-Rhett and Nathaniel Russell houses. We finished at the McLeod Plantation just on the edge of the city where the former enslaved quarters were still occupied in 1990!

Great meals at Darling Oyster House and Magnolias plus superb cocktails on the roof of our hotel the .

It's rare to see such a huge number of outstandingly preserved/renovated (and beautiful) buildings from the 1740s onwards and its also pretty sobering to realise this incredibly wealthy city was built on the back of a huge enslaved population.

For history, culture and food lovers, is a must 🇺🇸

We started our US road trip in , Georgia. What a gorgeous city it is with an easy walkable historic core built around 24 squares) and mansios - Live oaks with draped Spanish Moss are everywhere.

The riverfront, is fascinating with converted warehouses and lively restaurants/bars and every now and again a massive container ship passing right by.

The food has been a highlight and we've eaten our bodyweight in shrimp, grits, crab, clams slow cooked pork, biscuit and oysters. It's called the Low Country and they're justly proud of their local produce.
