Here are 5 tips from an osteopathic perspective to manage pain through good posture:

1. Understand Your Neutral Spine: Your osteopath can help you identify your body's neutral spinal alignment. This is the position where the natural curves of your spine are maintained, minimizing stress on muscles, ligaments, and joints. Maintaining this awareness in sitting, standing, and movement is key to long-term pain management.

2. Optimise Your Ergonomics: Whether at work or home, ensure your environment supports good posture. This includes having a supportive chair, a desk at the right height, and your computer screen positioned correctly (at eye level). Your osteopath can provide specific advice tailored to your daily activities.

3. Engage Your Core Muscles: A strong core (the muscles around your abdomen and lower back) acts as a natural support system for your spine. Your osteopath can teach you gentle exercises to engage these muscles effectively, helping to stabilize your posture and reduce strain that can lead to pain.

4. Practice Dynamic Posture: Good posture isn't about staying rigidly still. It's about being aware of your alignment as you move and shift positions. Regularly changing your posture, taking breaks from prolonged sitting or standing, and incorporating gentle movements can prevent stiffness and pain build-up.

5. Address Underlying Imbalances: Pain and poor posture are often linked to underlying musculoskeletal imbalances. An osteopath can identify and treat these imbalances through manual therapy techniques, which can improve your body's overall alignment and make it easier to maintain good posture naturally, thus reducing pain. They may also prescribe specific exercises to address weaknesses or tightness contributing to your postural issues and pain.

Remember, these tips are general guidelines. It's essential to consult with an osteopath for a personalised assessment and treatment plan to address your specific pain and postural concerns.
