Drama Editor Abby Robinson of the RadioTimes.com website has highlighted a moving aspect of this year’s Christmas Special concerning the redoubtable Miss Higgins, played by Georgie Glen. It’s an aspect of Christmas familiar to many viewers: that time when we take stock of the new realities in our lives - what is lost, and what has been gained. x

For Millicent Higgins, the climax to last season was a time of sudden revelations from the past, and the heartache of loving bonds cut short. Yet while one door closed, a new one opened…

“When Miss Higgins was a young woman, she was working in a library in Shimla, India when she met tutor Krishnan Choudhary. Before long, they were romantically involved, which they kept secret on account of it being absolutely forbidden to mingle with Indian people. In time, they had a son, but due to the taboo nature of their relationship, he was given to another family and that was the last she saw of him – that is until Miss Higgins was reunited with her child in Poplar last season, where she was overjoyed to learn that his son, Harry, is studying in Liverpool.”

Georgie continued: “Although her son tragically died in this story, she was at least reunited with him and she has gained a grandson, and her life is enriched by that.”

In the latest festive story, Miss Higgins spends her first Christmas with young Harry, fresh from university. How is Millicent coping with such disruption to her impeccably ordered life?

“For Miss Higgins, it’s now about navigating a new reality within that new discovery because... she’s lived a long life just with the grief and the memory of what happened”

Indeed. Past sadness can form such a steady routine in our lives, that the arrival of new love, new hope, and new happiness can sometimes seem like a disruptive stranger. But isn’t Christmas about welcoming these strangers into our home?
