St Mary Axe, EC3, is best known as the home of The Gherkin, but did you know the street’s name also hints at a Mary and an axe?

Once upon a time, there was a church here with quite the mouthful of a name: St Mary the Virgin, St Ursula, and the Eleven Thousand Virgins! The story of the 11,000 is a mix of legend and mystery, featuring King Cole, his daughter Ursula, and a rather grim encounter with Attila the Hun.

And Mary? She’s a bit of a puzzle too - though naturally, the Virgin Mary always takes centre stage. The axe? It might have been a relic or simply an old shop sign.

Which street name has you curious? Let us know in the comments!

No visit to Gough Square is complete without saying hello to Hodge, Dr Samuel Johnson's cherished cat! 🐾

Famed for his cheeky antics and love of oysters, Hodge is immortalised perched atop Johnson’s dictionary, with a few empty oyster shells at his side.

The statue bears the words "a very fine cat indeed," a delightful nod to a comment recorded in James Boswell's The Life of Samuel Johnson (1799).

Have you met Hodge yet? 🐈

We’re back with another fascinating story behind a street name in the City of London!

Did you know the word "mincing" has nothing to do with meat? It actually comes from an Old English term for a female monk - Mincheon or Minchun. According to John Stow's Survey of London (1598), Mincing Lane was named after the female monks from nearby St Helen’s Bishopsgate.
