🐻 Did you know that bears play in rain puddles too? A coastal brown bear sow and cub were caught playing in the rain, munching on blueberries, and stopped to get a quick drink from a nearby puddle out front of the ranger cabin.

A recent storm last week brought 21.1 inches of rain in two days at Chinitna Bay! This storm brought a surge of powerful waves to the bay and flooded creeks and the salt marsh meadow.

Elusive and majestic, the Canada Lynx is Alaska’s only wild cat species. The Dena’ina word for lynx is ‘kazhna’ meaning “black-tailed one.”

These great cats of the north have long tufts of black fur on the tips of their ears, a ruff of long hairs that frame the face, and a short, black-tipped tail. Known for their secretive nature, these stealthy predators have large feet and long legs that help them “float” on the snow and achieve incredible bursts of speed. Kazhna (lynx) live in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve’s forested habitat, where their population and home ranges are closely tied to their primary food source – the snowshoe hare.
