A lot of people have asked me about the group travel I've participated in, so I'm going to try and answer everyone's questions here.

Who are Seable? Seable are a small social enterprise that specialises in planning accessible holidays for blind and low vision people. They train a guide in each destination they offer, ensuring that they select someone who not only has a lot of local knowledge, but who will also treat blind people respectfully. My experience with the local guides has been overwhelmingly positive.

What is the holiday structure? Essentially you have a couple of options. Firstly there are group holidays, where you book a spot on a group trip and will show up and travel with a group of blind people who have also paid for this holiday. Blind people being blind people, it may turn out that you already know some of the group! Equally, you might not. You can also book a tailored holiday. This could be for yourself, your family, or a group of friends. You have more control over the activities you do and the length of the trip.

Is this just for people in the UK? Not at all. Anyone can go on a Seable holiday. Generally you arrange your own travel, with the exception of certain holidays, so it doesn't really matter where you travel from. Either way Seable staff can help recommend flights that might work for you. On the most recent holiday I was on, one participant traveled from India, and I know that people have traveled from the US before.

What is unique about Seable. For me, it's that I'm paying to have a guide that also knows how to behave around blind people. I'm not relying on a random sighted person who may or may not have good blindness etiquette. So I don't have to waste my energy trying to teach someone to calm down and be normal around me. I also know that the activities have been thought through in advance. Any advocacy that needs doing has been done, and I can just turn up and have a nice time. There's also an emphasis on walking and taking public transport, and overall respecting the places that are visited. Of course we sometimes have weird encounters with the general public because that's life, but you can pretty much guarantee that none of those are going to come from within the group, because any guides and volunteers have been tested in advance.

Is it expensive? Yes and no. The groups are fairly small depending on the holiday. Hotels are generally very nice, and activities are carefully selected. I've seen people argue that they could plan similar activities for a lower cost, and they absolutely could if they joined a huge walking tour, explored a museum alone, or stayed in a hostel. I don't think anyone is disputing that. You're paying for the convenience of having somebody else plan everything for you, and for getting a local guide who is also trained to make sure that every activity is accessible and that they know how to guide a blind person if wanted and also explain visual information in detail.

Would I recommend Seable? Yes, I would, and I'm extremely picky. I think they are great for those who are new to travel as well as people who are more experienced. As an experienced traveler, I do get annoyed that some participants won't use their cane which can make the group move slower. This is the truth, and I want to be honest in this post because you need to know what you're signing up for. Any travel group, blind or sighted, has to move at the pace of the slowest group member. So if you can't suck it up and deal with that, book a tailored holiday. I have still enjoyed my group experiences because the Seable staff members as well as the local guides have been amazing, and have ensured that I have access to a lot of tactile experiences, and that I can wander around and keep my brain occupied if others need more time. A lot of participants have said the holidays are quite fast paced, but honestly I'd say they are moderately paced. I think the brains of the guides are having to move quickly as they are balancing the needs of lots of different people and working out logistics to make sure we get to places on time, but when you're participating it feels very relaxed to me.
