On this day in 1940 a bomb struck the Tower of London.

On this day in 1940 a bomb struck the Tower of London, blowing apart the North Bastion and narrowly missing the White Tower. Tragically, there were two fatalities, YW Reeves and Lily Francess Lunn.

This was one of a number of times when the Tower of London was bombed during the Second World War. 🏰

I have at home an album of press cuttings relating to the career of my Grandmother, Leopoldine Avico (Nicholson) and her sisters who were successful London artist models.

I particularly like this cutting as it explains 'the mystery' as to why they were all models; taken from the 'Daily News' newspaper 'Occasionally an artist finds a perfect figure, face, or foot....I have found a whole colony of perfection, both male & female. You can shape the head of Adonis from the males, and Aphrodite from the maidens. They live in Tottenham Court, London. First there are the Avico sisters (and brother Victor, 14), Leopoldine aged 16, Gilda 16 and Marietta 17. Their father was Italian and himself gave artist sittings in Italy. A statue of Leopoldine a girl with perfect figure and features will be displayed at Wembley'
