Always lovely to make a safari dream a reality! “A huge thank you to for organising our wonderful trip to South Africa. Fantastic advice and guidance on the overall route, and we enjoyed the beach at Plettenberg and the wine country of Stellenbosch. The lodge recommended - was a perfect choice, comfortable and stylish but friendly for teenage children. And the game drives were incredible. Thank you for a holiday that has made memories for our family that will last forever #.

As Cop26 draws to a close, my thoughts turn to the world's dwindling wilderness areas, and on my latest trip I am keen to seek out the lodges and reserves in SA that have conservation at their core
To the west of the Kruger Park in the shadow of the majestic Drakensburg mountain range lies the pristine Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve. Here, the likeminded owners have joined forces to drop the fences between their concessions to create 25,000 hectares of protected conservancy enabling the wildlife to roam without restriction. This is big five country but with just two commercial lodges and therefore less human activity, the animals are left in comparative peace, the viewing experience is more exclusive and its very easy to feel as if you have the reserve all to yourself without other game viewers jostling for position. Whilst here I have had some incredible up-close wildlife encounters including leopard, wild dogs and the secretive black rhino. The GMPGR are involved in many research and conservation initiatives to introduce and preserve threatened species including cheetah, rhino and pangolin which guests visiting the reserve can support directly through sponsorship. During my stay I have been fortunate enough to be involved in the introduction of this magnificent cheetah to the reserve. The impact of travel on the planet is not something we can take for granted these days but if you are planning to jump on a plane to Africa you may want to consider visiting a lodge that has conservation and sustainability at it’s heart. If you need any inspiration, do get in touch.

The theme for this year's Earth day is “Restore Our Earth”. A recent study showed that 97% of Earth's land area may no longer be "ecologically intact,". It feels so overwhelming but we can all do our bit towards protecting the world’s ecosystems, ensuring that creatures like these elegant grass hoppers survive and thrive in the future.

Today is Save the Elephant Day. In 1930, as many as 10 million wild elephants roamed huge swaths of the African continent. But decades of poaching and human encroachment have since decimated elephant populations. Today, there are approximately 415,000 left in the wild across Africa. While elephant poaching is trending downward, with significant declines in East Africa, poaching continues to steer the species dangerously nearer to extinction. .inafrica

Things are looking up! The rains are here, the bush is green and lush, the wildlife sightings are magnificent and South Africa has moved to Level One which means things are finally opening up again for tourists. Many lodges have frozen their rates until 2023 so time to look to the future and think about your next safari holiday. .inafrica

The kudu is a stunningly handsome and majestic antelope, the second biggest antelope in fact, and the impressive horns which the males display may reach lengths of up to 1.8 metres.

To see one of these imposing animals in the wild is a truly magical experience.

It’s name is derived directly from the Khoikhoi, and folklore has it that the name is descriptive of the sound the animal’s hooves makes as it gallops away from danger. .inafrica

Today is World Pangolin Day in honour of this most secretive and threatened creature. We were fortunate enough to meet this handsome chap in the Kruger just as the sun was setting. Pangolins are poached for their keratin scales for Chinese remedies which have no proven medicinal value, much the same way as rhino horn. Sadly subsequently their numbers are now in decline.

Today Ant and I are planting spekboom. Spekboom, also know as pork bush and elephant bush, is officially a magical, wonder plant
and this is why.

It helps fight climate change.
This incredible plant helps to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by acting like a carbon sponge helping to combat global warming. Spekboom can absorb an astonishing four to ten tonnes of carbon per hectare per year. According to the Spekboom Foundation the Spekboom’s “capacity to offset harmful carbon emissions is compared to that of moist, subtropical forests. It is unique in that it stores solar energy to perform photosynthesis at night making it 10 times more effective at carbon fixing than any tropical rainforest”

Wildlife love it.
Spekboom is incredibly juicy and nutritious and animals go mad for it. Especially elephants, kudu and black rhino. Elephants can eat up to 200kg of spekboom a day!
In flower it’s beautiful pink blossom offers rich nectar for insects and bird life.
It’s even edible for us and delicious in a salad or a stew.

It’s a super-survivor.
Spekboom is fire-resistant, water-wise and can live for up to 200 years. It has a photosynthetic mechanism which allows it to adapt to all weather conditions from drought to frost so it’s virtually invincible. It is also excellent at preventing soil erosion with it’s soil-binding roots.
It’s easy to care for and propagate. If an elephant breaks off a branch and tosses it onto the ground it will take root where it falls creating a whole new plant.

Spekboom is indigenous to South Africa but can be found all over the world to buy in nurseries so if you want to do your bit for the environment and global warming there is no easier way than to simply plant a spekboom in the garden or even in a pot on the kitchen window sill.
