Discover Trinid

ad and Tobago, a unique True Caribbean paradise. Bursting with spirit and a heady mix of cultural activities, eco adventure and culinary delights, there is no place in world quite like our tiny twin island, republic of 1.3 million ethnically diverse people. Our country presents a dual experience - from the cosmopolitan, bustling towns of Trinidad, to lazy days sunbathing on pristine beaches in Tobago. The southernmost island in the Caribbean, Trinidad, the larger and livelier of the sisters, is an industrial giant boasting exciting nightlife, a robust energy sector and growing manufacturing industry. Trinidad is also home to several spectacular ecotourism attractions, including the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, home of Scarlet Ibis and manatees, and the Asa Wright Nature Centre, a bird-watchers paradise hidden under the thick canopy of our rain forest. Alive with nightlife, Trinidad boasts a myriad of options from Irish pubs, to live theatre and modern dance clubs. But if Trinidad is the energetic heart of these islands, Tobago is its serene soul. Just two hours away from Port-of-Spain by fast ferry, or 15 minutes by air travel, Tobago offers the weary traveller an escape from the beaten tourist track. Covered by lush forests and surrounded by sparkling blue bays, Tobago remains untouched, awaiting discovery. Its waters are home to spectacular reefs, boasting 300 hundred species of coral and colourful fish while the island’s rugged spine is home to the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere. A friendly nation, our people are some of the most fun loving and welcoming in the Caribbean. The diversity of our people is also reflected in the islands’ numerous festivals. Each individual culture is celebrated by the collective peoples that inhabit these islands. In Trinidad and Tobago, we celebrate the Hindu festival of Divali, the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr and numerous Christian festivals, including Christmas. Spanning all boundaries of race and religion, Christmas can truly be described as a national festival. The Christmas season is a wonderful time to visit Trinidad and Tobago. The islands abound with cheery music – carols of Hispanic origin we call Parang – sumptuous culinary delights and musical merriment. The season would not be the same without the exotic sounds of our indigenous instrument, the steel pan - the only musical instrument invented in the 20th century. The steel pan is also a major component of our Carnival celebrations, often described as the world’s greatest street festival.

How did Spanish-language Christmas songs become so popular in the English-speaking islands?

Good things come in twos!

While Trinidad's doubles embody a story of desperation and opportunity, the humble chickpea sandwich has a contested origin that's part of a decades-long family feud.
