This session saw our expert speakers guide us through the accessibility requirements of Alt Text for digital books. What is Alt Text, its purpose, why it's important, how to do it, how not to do it, common pitfalls to avoid etc. We looked at different types of scenarios and contexts, to help determine when/if Alt Text is appropriate/required and if so, how best to describe, and the impact on workflows.

This course provides an introduction to Thema – the international subject classification scheme for the global book trade – explaining the need for such a scheme; its origins, development and uptake; its benefits across the trade; and the principles of implementing Thema in systems and product records.

Whatever your background, whether from an editorial, marketing or systems perspective, this course is relevant to individuals from all professional disciplines within the trade. Some familiarity with bibliographic subject classification (e.g. use of schemes such as BISAC or Thema) is assumed, but not considered essential.

🌟 Industry Returns Initiative (IRI): Call for volunteers

LAST CHANCE TO APPLY

BIC has launched its annual review of IRI. As an integral part of sustainable returns management for 20 years, these reviews focus on ensuring that the standard continues to meet the needs of returns stakeholders.

We are now looking for representatives from the BIC membership to get involved in this review between January and March 2025. If you want to volunteer and can actively and reliably contribute your time, expertise and ideas, please go to the BIC website for more information, including the Review Brief and a very simple Application Form.

The deadline for applications is tomorrow - 10th January 2025.

Successful applicants will be contacted and should be available to meet individually with Stephen Long, BIC Consultant, ahead of the review group officially starting.

1-YEAR DELAY TO EU DEFORESTATION REGULATION APPROVED

In case you missed it before the festive break, on 19th December 2024, both the European Parliament and The European Commission formally approved a 1-year of phasing-in time for the EU Deforestation Regulation, making it applicable on 30 December 2025 for large companies and 30 June 2026 for micro- and small enterprises.

🚨 Latest information about EUDR on 19th December 2024 🚨

✅ One Year Phasing-in Time for EUDR Now Approved! ✅

Both the European Parliament and The European Commission have approved a 1-year of phasing-in time for the EU Deforestation Regulation, making it applicable on 30 December 2025 for large organisations and 30 June 2026 for micro- and small enterprises.

The European Parliament and Council have now formally adopted the 1-year delay. There have been no changes to the regulation. This extra year of phasing-in time is welcome and will allow organisations the time they need to implement any process and system changes to comply with the regulation when it goes into force.
