Stained Glass from Mariawald (About 1520-30)
On display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London: Stained Glass from Mariawald (About 1520-30).
This exceptionally fine glass comes from the cloister of a Cistercian abbey near
Cologne. Two windows have been reconstructed to show how they would originally have appeared. Three further panels are displayed on each side.
The monks walked past this glass on the way from their living quarters to the church. The images juxtapose the events of Christ's life with Old Testament events that pre-figured them. Below, praying donors are shown alongside their patron saints.

Walking through The Water Gate in Greenwich and taking in views of the Grand Square designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The architectural centrepiece is the Old Royal Naval College, part of Maritime Greenwich, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As for The Water Gate:"Many famous arrivals and departures have taken place here. Anne Boleyn left Greenwich Palace to travel up the River Thames to both her coronation and to the Tower of London for imprisonment and execution. Also, the body of Admiral Lord Nelson arrived here by river following his death at the Battle of Trafalgar." Video Credit: © Ursula Petula Barzey. #BlueBadgeTouristGuide #LetsDoLondon #VisitLondon
Walking through the Painted Hall, one of the highlights of a visit to the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. Designed in the early 18th century by Sir James Thornhill, it currently has Museum of the Moon, a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram in the middle of the room.On display until February 5th, the Musem of the Moon placard reads:"Set in the magnificent Painted Hall, the awe-inspiring large-scale display features minute detail of the lunar surface using NASA imagery and a surround sound composition by BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones.Measuring seven metres in diameter, the moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface, which was taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, launched in 2010. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon's surface. Over its lifetime, the Museum of the Moon will be presented in different ways both indoors and outdoors altering the experience and interpretation of the artwork. A view of The Nereid Monument within the British Museum in London. The museum label reads:
"The Nereid Monument
About 380 BC
Southwestern Turkey
In the early 1840s, Charles Fellows, a traveller and antiquary, led two expeditions to Lycia (southwestern Turkey). He obtained the permission of the Ottoman Sultanate in Constantinople (Istanbul), to excavate at Xanthos. The Nereid Monument lay in ruins when Fellows discovered it. Once a firman (permit) had been secured, Fellows began to excavate and remove what he found, with funding from the British Museum. Fellows had the expert assistance of sailors from the Royal Navy to move and transport the heavy stone sculptures and architectural pieces, which were floated on rafts down the river Xanthos to the ship HMS Beacon. This transported the finds to Malta, before they were shipped onwards to Britain."
