We're very excited to announce that the ACE Travel Management team has fully transitioned to remote working. Don’t worry we still have our Pall Mall office when it’s needed for meetings!

We want to give a special shout out to our very own queen of sustainability, Angela, who did an amazing job recycling and reselling our office furniture to make sure none of the equipment from our Brentwood office went to waste.

Students and all manner of businesses benefited from the sales which prevented a significant amount of our office items from ending up in a landfill. Thanks for all your efforts, Angela! 👏

Last week's abrupt announcement that Portugal would be moved on to the Amber List for travel was the latest in a long line of damaging blows dealt to the travel sector, causing untold havoc for travellers already abroad and those who have just recently booked trips to the country.

But whilst this past week might have been hard, we’re not giving up! ✊

Despite what might be happening around us, it's important to remember that:

- The ‘Test & Release’ scheme means you will only have to quarantine for five days if your COVID-19 test is negative, making travel more seamless.
- You might be able to qualify for exemptions from one or more of the COVID-related travel restrictions depending on your profession.
- The EU has unveiled plans that will allow anyone who has received the last dose of a vaccine two weeks prior to travelling to be granted entrance into EU Member states.

So there are some reasons to be optimistic! And if you need help navigating the current obstacles facing business travel, you know who to speak to 👇

Permit in advance plan for travel to the United Kingdom

The UK is planning to introduce a new ‘permit in advance’ scheme for travel to the United Kingdom. The scheme is said to be part of a move to a ‘fully digital border which the Home Office says will help keep out dangerous criminals and make it easier to count arrivals accurately.”
The Electronic Travel Authorisation System (ETAS) will be similar in concept to the United States’ Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) scheme and the European Union’s European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) scheme which comes into force next year.

Non-citizens who wish to visit and are entitled to come visa-free for short stays will have to fill in the online form before they arrive in the UK.

The IATA Travel Pass is a mobile application that helps travellers to store and manage their verified certifications for COVID-19 tests or COVID-19 vaccines.
It will help people to travel with ease while meeting any government requirements for COVID-19 tests or vaccines.
It enables passengers to receive Covid-19 test results and verify they are eligible to undertake their journey through an ‘OK to Travel’ status.
The digital health verification app has been under development since last year, and over 20 airlines have signed up for trials in the coming weeks and months.

With sustainability being a top priority for all within the travel industry, many airlines and travel providers are searching for ways to transform their usual service offerings.

For example, Nippon Airways (ANA) is improving its environmental stance by becoming the first Japanese airline to introduce meal trays made from biodegradable materials – and this change will reduce the amount of disposable plastic used for inflight services by approximately 30%! ♻️

What changes do you expect to see in the coming years? 💭

“The need for a robust, tested and formalised risk management process – that also gives travellers confidence – has never been more abundantly clear.”

It’s fair to say that the impact of COVID-19 has been devastating for industries across the globe. Within the travel sector, it has heightened focus around safety procedures and duty of care – so, the introduction of ISO 31030 could not have arrived at a better time!

Airport e-gates to validate passenger locator forms

The UK government has announced that it will allow e-gates at the country’s airports to validate passenger locator forms. All passengers currently have to complete the forms prior to their arrival in the country and will continue to need to do so once the traffic light system comes into force

Border Force will roll out e-gates integration across the largest airports by summer 2021 and all e-gate ports of entry by autumn 2021.

Traffic Light System - A Visual released so far

From 17 May at the earliest, for all countries, a Traffic Light System will be introduced to which different restrictions are applied depending on risk. This risk will likely be based on factors such as the level of community transmission of Variants of Concern, levels of testing, genomic sequencing and reporting. This will allow the UK government the flexibility to adapt to the evolving health situation around the world whilst keeping borders open.

• Red countries: High-risk countries (currently known as “red list”).
• Amber countries: Moderate-risk countries.
• Green countries: Low-risk countries.

We will update you as soon as more information has been released

“We will work with the travel industry and private testing providers ahead of international travel reopening to see how we can further reduce the cost of travel for the British public while ensuring travel is as safe as possible. This could include cheaper tests being used when travellers return home, as well as whether the government would be able to provide pre-departure tests.”

Following a report submitted by Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, to the Prime Minister, the UK government has announced its commitment to reducing the cost of COVID tests. Read the full story 👇

British Airways invests in hydrogen-powered planes

British Airways and a group of tech, green and energy investors – including Li Ka-Shing's Horizons Ventures, Shell Ventures and the Ecosystem Integrity Fund –are investing US$24.3 million in aircraft company ZeroAvia to fund the development of a 50+ seater plane capable of running on zero emissions hydrogen-electric power that could fly as soon as 2026.

The company expects to have a 20-seater aircraft running on hydrogen-electric power with a range of up to 500 miles by 2024 and is aiming for a 100-seat aircraft by 2030.

British Airways has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through a series of initiatives. In addition to exploring and investing in the growth of these new longer-term technologies, the airline is also investing in the development of sustainable aviation fuels, flying more fuel-efficient aircraft and exploring the use of carbon capture technology.
