This year marks the first time that Morocco recognises the Amazigh new year as an official holiday.

Yennayer marks the first day of the Amazigh calendar used since ancient times by the Amazigh people - native inhabitants of Northern Africa.
The Amazigh year 2974 corresponds to the present year 2024 of the Gregorian calendar.
According to the Amazigh year count, year zero began with the ascension of the Amazigh King Shoshenq I (ⵛⵛⵏⵈ) as Pharaoh to the throne of Egypt in 950 BC.
Yennayer is a celebration of the culture and identity of the Imazighen people, and this year is particularly special for Morocco, as King Mohammed made Yennayer an official national holiday.
