Some people don’t just want to cross oceans and traverse landscapes, they want to gaze into times long past. To engage their curiosity. To use their heads.

But not for ego, unlike the ruler of the Commagene Kingdom in Eastern Turkey, Antiochus. It is said that a successful start to his rule is all it took to convince him of his god-like status, so he ordered that a funerary mound be built in his honour, immortalising his place among the gods with stone statues. It may have been a short-lived reign, but these severed stone heads are pretty unforgettable.

Our traveller, Julia Nora Underwood, got to experience the majestic Sagsai Golden Eagle Festival in Mongolia last year and took these stunning photos! 🦅

‘We stayed with a golden eagle hunting family for some days preceding the festival and shared in their preparations before travelling with them to the event.

Along with the expected eagle luring competitions, there were also other nomad games including kokboru, a sport dating back to the times of Genghis Khan to make soldiers strong for battle. Then, slightly more light-hearted, we watched the ladies chase the guys with whips!’

Conscious of championing the ‘underdog’ and the ever-growing fight against overtourism, we sent Claudia Rowan (The Times and The Sunday Times) island-hopping around one of the lesser-visited South East Asian countries in October. 🇰🇭

With a healthy juxtaposition of buzzing cities versus pristine white beaches and luxury accommodation (including Jaya House Hotels River Park and The Royal Sands Koh Rong Resort) it’s very easy to see why Cambodia shouldn’t be overlooked!

Beyond the idyllic resorts and significant historic & cultural experiences, are the Cambodian people who bolster the industry with enthusiasm and warmth. Our regional manager, Narla Phay, said, “Our tourism industry is being driven by a new generation who are proud of their country and are excited to show it to the world.”

Congratulations to Wild Frontiers Foundation trustee, John Brown, on being awarded an OBE in the King's New Year's Honours List for services to charity.

John, who has been Panel Chair and a trustee of our foundation since 2011, was recognised for the wealth of charitable work he does across a number of sectors, which also includes the School for Social Enterprises and Camera Education.

We are absolutely delighted that his great work has been acknowledged.

Isla Fernandina - population: 0

(Humans that is 👍)

Wild Frontiers Latin America expert Richard Leonardi visited Fernandina, the most virgin of the Galapagos archipelago islands this December. All access to its interior is prohibited except for scientific research.

It is teaming with wildlife and those lucky enough to take a boat around the western shores of Isabela Island are treated to a precious couple of hours on the eastern shore of this pristine jewel.

“The richness and purity of the wildlife on Fernandina is astonishing. If Galapagos is a lovely chorus singing the planet's natural praises, Fernandina is one of its most beautiful soloists.” 💚
