The Home farm woods on Huntey Estate are awash with their annual display of beautiful snow drops, heralding the beginnings of the end of winter.

These gardens will be open to the public this weekend through the open garden scheme, which raises money for local charities. Check their website for details:

Guess who?! 🌳🌿🍂

Tree identification in winter uses recognition of shape, buds, barks, and remaining fruits, as leaves are obviously mostly gone or rotting.

In these pictures, we have some lovely examples of twisty oak twigs, red elder buds, hazel catkins and misty alder cones, all visible against the tree structure.

Our friend Paula found this delicate wonder of nature in Brights Hill in Huntley estate last week. The conditions required for the formation of hair ice are extremely specific, so sighting it is relatively scarce.

This strange candyfloss look is caused by a fungus called exidiopsis effusa. The action of the fungus is to enable the ice to form very thin hairs. If you are out in these low temperatures, just look around in the woods as you are likely to spot it on decaying branches.

🌱 Signs of bluebells appearing already @ Bearfoot Woods, what an uplifting sight as the winter months take hold. Nature will always be there waiting for us and reminding us beautiful times are still ahead we just need to be patient 🌱

There is a shift from winter’s chill to spring’s renewal, to the warmth of summer, and then to autumn’s changing colours when nature slowly heads towards a well deserved rest 🌲

We love this beautiful montage of May Hill summit over the seasons from Paula Golding ❤️

It's National Tree Week in the UK 🇬🇧 🌳🌲🌴

Since 1973, National Tree Week has been the U.K.’s largest tree celebration. This year, it takes place from November 27 to December 5. The purpose of National Tree Week, which is held to kick off the annual winter tree-planting season, is to encourage the public to plant trees and appreciate the beauty and importance of trees in our environment.

Trees provide us with so much from oxygen, climate control, shade, food, fibre, and the amazing amount of life they nuture and provide.

It seems a fitting time to feature this wonderful, venerable old oak that we believe is the oldest tree on Huntley Estate, which stands like an old grandfather in the woodlands.

One of the things that happens regularly in Huntley Estate plantations is chainsaw training, with partners KNW and trainer Derrick Byas. This time, he is training our kids!

This way, the woodlands are thinned by removing some of the conifers to allow the others to grow taller and wider.

Meanwhile, providing a valuable opportunity for people to learn how to fell trees and handle a chainsaw efficiently and safely.

A view from the air.

These photos were taken by one of our safari tent guests, who brought his drone with him while they stayed with us.

We love these, as they show what a special place we are located in! Our cottage and safarit tents are nestled in the woodlands of Huntley estate, on May Hill.

The images show the interface between the hamlet of May Hill with the woodlands.

Why don't you come and experience the site yourself when we reopen the tents in 2025?
