Welcome to the fascinating Republic of Karelia. Although the population of Karelia identify as predominantly Russia Orthodox, Karelia has its own proud identity, culture and history. The architecture itself is unique and the beauty of the countryside there drew Catherine the Great to holiday here in the 18th century.

The beautiful and serene Nikitsky Monastery in Pereslavl-Zelessky. Another unmissable attraction on our Golden Ring tours. The Monastery has had an interesting history, being used by Tsars in the 17th century and also as a soviet military base in the 1950s. It was reclaimed and restored by the Orthodox Church in the 1990s.

One of the reasons you should travel out of Moscow and St Petersburg on the Golden Ring tour is for the quirky and unique Russian museums, such as this one dedicated to Russian toys in Sergiev Posad. The city claims to have invented the Maytryoshka dolls and the museums here hold toys once beloved of the Russian Royal family as well as culturally significant folk made toys.

The Annuciation Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin is renowned for it's gold foil domes. It is interesting because it is a thoroughly Russian creation, being designed by local Russian architects in the 15th century, whereas other cathedrals in Moscow were designed by Italian architects.

Dreaming of Trans-Siberian journeys, with incredible scenery, comfy cabins and the gentle sound of a historic engine chugging away ....

The Trans-Siberian spans nearly the whole country, departing Moscow in the west and travelling to Vladivostok in the east. The entire journey is 9,200km long (5,700mi) and would take 152 hours and 27 minutes to complete non-stop. The pictures below are of the 'Golden Eagle' one of the most luxurious trains to traverse the route.

The Amber Room is valued at a whopping $500,000. Originally containing six tonnes of amber, lit with candle light and covered in gold gilt, the room could not be hidden from invading N**i troops during WWII. The curators responsible for removing the art treasures in Leningrad tried to disassemble and remove the Amber Room. However, over the years the amber had dried out and become brittle, making it impossible to move the room without the amber crumbling. The Amber Room was therefore hidden behind mundane wallpaper, in an attempt to keep German forces from seizing it, but obviously failed. The room is now restored beautifully and is considered by some to be the 8th Wonder of the World.

Reindeer husbandry in Russia is the basis of the cultures of many northern indigenous peoples. Domesticated reindeer allows the herders to live in harmony with the extremely severe natural conditions of the Far North. They sew their clothing from reindeer fur using reindeer tendons as thread, live in tepees made of reindeer fur, drink warm reindeer blood and eat raw meat.

Many herders say: “Our people will live as long as the reindeer are here. If there are no reindeer – there will not be our people”.

It's still deep snow in Russia today, but not everyone minds the cold. St Bernard's have saved countless lives of freezing adventurers who come to peril, by lying close to them and keeping them warm whilst help arrives. Fluffy heroes!

There is little more important to Russian culture than tea drinking, especially in Tula, Russia's samovar capital. Although the type of samovar you possessed, its metal work and quality, would vary greatly with class, tea drinking has been common too all people in Russia for hundreds of years. Time to put the kettle on?

There has been some unusual and exciting 'Space Weather' this January across the skies of Russia. This January, scientists have been recording some of the most vivid and unique Northern Light activity in decades. This is the result of more 'sunspot' activity on the sun than there has been in at least five years. If you're visiting the Arctic Circle this month, you are in for a real treat.

Six more sleeps till Christmas here in the UK and our Russia team have begun their countdown too: twenty days until Orthodox Christmas. The difference in dates is down to the Orthodox church not adopting the Gregorian dates for Christmas and Easter in order to keep Easter and Passover separate. It means a longer festive period for us at Real Russia and we are not mad about it!
