Cycling holiday makers on our Black and White villages cycle tour met a real mixture of old and new this week. Filming was underway for Maggie O'Farrells great book , starring Jessie Buckley. Weobley has been transformed into Shakespeare's Stratford on Avon for a few days. Lots of dirt and the Black and White buildings became mostly brown (It was the Victorians who painted the half timbered houses black and white)

Happy St David’s Day

A day for munching on WelshCakes, Welsh Rarebit, and of course celebrating the fact we have the best flag (it’s got a dragon .. you can’t get any cooler) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

And just look at that view in the photo.. Wales incredible landscape, the background for adventure, experiences and making memories..

But, what is the day all about ? well, here are a few interesting facts about Saint David that you might not know already, that we have borrowed from the Visit Wales website

01 He was born in a storm

St David was born in the year 500, the grandson of Ceredig ap Cunedda, king of Ceredigion. According to legend, his mother St Non gave birth to him on a Pembrokeshire clifftop during a fierce storm. The spot is marked by the ruins of Non’s Chapel, and a nearby holy well is said to have healing powers.

02 He was a fine preacher

St David became a renowned preacher, founding monastic settlements and churches in Wales, Brittany and southwest England – including, possibly, the abbey at Glastonbury. St David reputedly made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, from which he brought back a stone that now sits in an altar at St Davids Cathedral, built on the site of his original monastery.

03 He was a teetotal vegetarian

St David and his monks followed a simple, austere life. They ploughed the fields by hand, rather than using oxen, and refrained from eating meat or drinking beer. St David himself was reputed to have consumed only leeks and water – which is perhaps why the leek became a national symbol of Wales.

04 He performed miracles

The most famous miracle associated with St David took place when he was preaching to a large crowd in Llanddewi Brefi. When people at the back complained that they could not hear him, the ground on which he stood rose up to form a hill. A white dove, sent by God, settled on his shoulder.

05 His legacy lives on

St David died on 1 March – St David’s Day - in 589. He was buried at the site of St Davids Cathedral, where his shrine was a popular place of pilgrimage throughout the Middle Ages. His last words to his followers came from a sermon he gave on the previous Sunday:

‘Be joyful, keep the faith, and do the little things that you have heard and seen me do.’

The phrase ‘Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd’ - ‘Do the little things in life’ - is still a well-known maxim in Wales. 🌼

The Black and White villages of Herefordshire are packed full of half timbered medieval houses, and many other quirky architectural gems like Pembridge’s market hall and grand Norwegian style church bell tower, the medieval dovecotes at Eardisland and Luntley and of course, Castles at Hay on Wye and Croft Castle. A three day cycle tour from Wheely Wonderful Cycling is a great way to explore the area at our own pace; easy cycling on quiet country lanes.
Fortunately there are also lots of great places to eat and drink to fuel you on your way;
🚲 Dunkerton's cider farm (The Cider Barn),
🚲the New Inn (only 600 years old),
🚲Yarpole church for coffee, (their bell tower is one of the oldest timber structures in the UK),
🚲 Jules Café Bar in Weobley
🚲You stay in the lovely village of Weobley, in The Salutation or the grand Mellington House.
🚲You can make this even easier by using one of our electric bikes.
Here is a preview some of these wonderful places you will visit on your cycling holiday- you will love it!

Is this our best Tripadvisor Review ever?
We were very flattered that this summer Chris and his daughter cycled our Wye Valley Cycle tour and said:

"Just returned from a 3 day cycling tour with my Daughter. Having had many holidays to worldwide destinations the Herefordshire/Wye valley area and the tour arranged so efficiently by Kay & Chris topped them all"

Herefordshire is a wonderful place to explore by bike; tucked away on the English/Welsh border, it is full of beautiful views, relaxed, quirky and all full of wonderful food and drink and warm welcomes. And more than anything else it's peaceful. Chris and his daughter were bowled over by the birdsong and lack of traffic.
All in all a great place for a cycling holiday, have a look at our Herefordshire cycling holidays.
