Lynton & Lynmouth

Lynton & Lynmouth Lynton & Lynmouth, affectionately known as 'England's Little Switzerland', on the Exmoor Coast of North Devon.
(953)

Stunning scenery, fabulous places to eat and drink, independent shops, gorgeous cinema and the famous Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway! Making for one of Devon and the South West’s prettiest picture postcard resorts, the twin villages of Lynton & Lynmouth in North Devon are situated on the dramatic and rugged Heritage Coast of Exmoor National Park. Lynton at the top of a gorge is connected by the w

orld famous water powered funicular cliff railway to the harbour village of Lynmouth below. Lynton & Lynmouth were “discovered” in the first decade of the 19th century when the Napoleonic Wars closed the Continent to travellers. Unable to make their Grand Tours of Europe due to the conflict visitors to Lynton & Lynmouth and the Lyn Valley area christened it “Little Switzerland” as it was reminiscent and evocative of their sojourns through the Alps en route to Italy. It’s spectacular beauty inspired famous literary figures such as Wordsworth, Coleridge Blackmore and Shelley, and years later Lynmouth was the scene of a devastating flood in 1952. Set in the heart of Exmoor, these twin towns are the perfect base to start your exploration of some of the most stunning scenery in Britain. Find Lynton & Lynmouth on the north coast of Devon in Exmoor National Park on the A39 between Minehead and Barnstaple.

Let's step back in time ... look at this very rare photograph of Woody Bay in the first few years of the twentieth century.

What is now known as Martinhoe Manor (but was then known as the Woody Bay Hotel) is in the centre of the photograph. What is more interesting is the pier in the bottom right of the picture. This was built in the 1890s and only survived for about ten years before it was entirely swept away by North Devon's cruel storms.

The Lyn & Exmoor Museum will be closed for renovations during 2025, but please follow them on Facebook for more of the Lyn Valley's fascinating history at the Lyn & Exmoor Museum

Have a very Merry Christmas from everyone at the Lyn & Exmoor Museum 🎄

Step back in time with us ... look at this barely unrecognisable view of Lynton from Summerhouse Hill, probably taken in the early 1870s. Look carefully and notice that Hollerday Hill is completely bare of trees. Nowadays, Hollerday Hill is a beautiful lush woodland backdrop, teaming with wildlife.

Also notice, that Lee Lane (now ‘Lee Road’) is a track with no houses whatsoever and there are no streets between Lydiate Lane and Lee Road, just hedgerows, possibly where the streets now run.

The museum is closed for renovations during 2025, so please follow them on Facebook for more of the Lyn Valley's fascinating history at the Lyn & Exmoor Museum

A step back in time .... beautiful photograph of Lynmouth in the 1920s, long before the great flood of 1952. Sadly most of these buildings nor the bridge survived the flood.
