We’re sad to say that Isfryn Cottage has taken its final booking. We will be closing its doors for the last time on 16th September 2024. New Welsh Government rules mean that if we can’t guarantee to be occupied for 182 nights a year, we cannot continue to be counted as a business. In our beautiful, quiet valley, some years we’ll exceed the target, others not. The penalty for failure is that, despite being part of the building we live in, Isfryn will be counted as a second home and will face 3 times Council Tax. We literally cannot afford to take the chance. We’ve had eight happy and successful years in which we’ve been privileged to host lovely people, some of whom are now like old friends. We’ve brought over 1,000 people to enjoy the beauties of this area and we’d like to send our warmest thanks and good wishes to everyone who has come to stay.

Sunset over Barmouth on the Mawddach Estuary.
Two local walks, the Old and New Precipice walks offer fabulous sunset views of the estuary, when the weather is right. The main picture was taken from near the car park of the New Precipice Walk. With a quick drive down the road we managed to sneak a couple of final sunset shots at Barmouth itself.

Isfryn is a cosy cottage for two on the beautiful southern border of Eryri/Snowdonia. One of the many lovely walks in the area is around Llyn Barfog (Bearded . Lake). According to legend, the lake is a gateway to the Otherworld. It was said that the Gwragedd Annwn, the Elphin Dames, would emerge from the waters and would be glimpsed among the hillsides with their snow white dogs and cattle. The walk begins at a little shed full of provisions to send you in your way. It offers beautiful views of the estuary and sea. Come and visit to explore this beautiful area. Just a few pictures from yesterday's walk through Bryn Eglwys slate quarry and up to the pretty little packhorse bridge Pont Llaeron. The quarry area itself is an impressive area to visit, with some huge open chambers next to the footpath - I'm not sure my picture does justice to the size of the holes! The quarry closed in 1946, after a long period of decline and now a popular local walking spot (for those that know the route in). There are two ways to drive in and both involve bumpy untarmaced tracks - ask us for directions if you'd like to visit. Despite being only a mile or so from the quarry Pont Llaeron feels a very isolated spot, apparently it could have been built in the 1700s or early 1800s for carrying slate out to ships at Aberdyfi, before the Tallyllyn railway was built.

Our Local Social Enterprise Cwmni Nod Glas recently improved and signposted a series of circular walks in the area - the routes vary from easy flat 2 miles to a strenuous 12 mile all-dayer. Paper maps are available in local shops and online maps and directions are available at https://dinasmawddwy.co.uk/

Yesterday we walked the 'Cwm Cewydd Path' from Dinas Mawddwy, which took around 2.5 Hours.

It's a really pretty stroll alongside the Afon Dyfi followed by a climb up through woods and then back down via wild flower meadows and a shady lane.

Creiglyn Dyfi, the source of the Afon Dyfi, is an isolated mountain lake high above the Mawddwy valley, at the foot of Aran Fawddwy.

No marked footpaths lead there, so it doesn't receive many visitors, and it feels a truly wild place.

This walk starts from Llanymawddwy, 8 miles from Isfryn. I scrambled up the impressive Tap Nyth yr Eryr (Eagles Nest Crag) and then descended to Ceunant y Briddell - 'The Gorge of the Grave' is the most melodramatic translation.

A long and pretty walk up Llaethnant and below Foel Hafod Fynydd leads to the Llyn. Llaethnant means 'valley of milk' and Foel Hafod-fynydd is 'bare mountain of the summer farm' so it's likely that cattle were kept here in the past.

The llyn itself is a stunning spot, bu even in the summer the water is very chilly indeed!

If you'd like to do the walk, here's an OS Map route https://explore.osmaps.com/route/17345670/creiglyn-dyfi-from-blaen-pennant-via-tap-nyth-yr-eryr?lat=52.784201&lon=-3.659970&zoom=14.0737&style=Leisure&type=2d
