It’s been a snowy day here in the Preselis and beyond! The lambs have had their first snow day and proclaimed it a success as it means extra crunchies (aka super muesli for sheep) and plenty of hay throughout the day. Very cold out of the sun but they’re toasty warm in all that fleece.

Who’s had snow where they are?

Upcycled storage that we used when the barns were not watertight was turned into a lamb shelter yesterday in the rains and low cloud. They love it as they now have dry hay too in there over winter. Maisie and Benedict continue to grow (slowly!) and have two pals including Hopper in the photo who joined along with his pal Seth. Both welsh mountain lambs born this year and saved from being chops by ole softie here. So the gang is four and eventually they’ll meet the grown ups, when the Herdwicks have some more weight on to hold their own!

A couple of new additions at Danclawdd. Herdwick lambs born this Spring; Benedict is the first photo, so named as my friend thinks he has the whiff of Benedict Cumberbatch about him. Then little Maisie who’s named as such because she’s Amaaaazin’. They’ve both been a bit below par due to some issues picked up whilst they were in quarantine here, especially Maisie who had the vet out and was very poorly but they seem to be picking up now and hopefully gaining some weight. They’ll have their own space for a while before they mingle as they’re very small under that fflwff! This week has seen the introduction of a few hours in a small field and they’re very excited by that! They’re so tame they follow me like labradors. 😂

After a splendid June I have to say that July has been a wee bit of a washout!!! The current guests even lit the log burner as it was so wet and windy outside! Nothing like some real flames to make you feel cosy - even in midsummer! 🔥🙈😂😳

The warm weather also meant we needed to get our VERY hot and woolly sheep sheared. We shear quite early for the hills but the blend of sheep that we have grow thick Icelandic or Herdwick or Shetland fleeces, in some cases very heavy fleeces and I always worry about them getting flystrike when it turns warm and they’re long in wool. So Sunday brought with us a dry and settled day and Wyn, a local farmer who shears came over and got them all looking tidy.

I also say that sheep duties are a good test of marital harmony 😂 as is chasing errant sheep around the field, stopping them leaping sheep hurdles in a panic and then waiting for them to realise that they are indeed the same flock but they look & smell different.

Poor Basil is wondering if they offer sheep Botox for his wrinkles 😂🥰🙈🐑

The colours of the sea are breathtaking at the moment!! A glorious spell of dry settled weather albeit with some very high winds yesterday especially in the hills! I had a lovely walk around Stackpole and Barafundle, these were taken up on Stackpole Head in beautiful warm sunshine. 🥰

One of the jobs over the weekend was a local farmer/shearer coming to tidy some of the sheep derrières up in case of warmer weather and flies. A couple of the youngsters had got a little bit mucky around the bottom so they had a good ole tidy up to keep them cleaner and poor Basil got himself in the pen too so his fluffy tail had a trim. He’s got a three stage bottom hairdo going on from his bums and tums last September! - all they’ve had today is wind and rain around the nether regions tho!

The rain is pouring down here today, but the weekend was lovely and settled albeit pretty breezy yesterday. We had a lot of jobs to sort on the land and with the sheep but managed a walk around Aber Hescwm and a quick drive out to the a very wild Strumble Head yesterday afternoon.

We still have very good availability in May which is so unusual for us! It’s a stunning month to visit, light days, Spring flowers and uncrowded beaches and paths. The rest of the year also has a few gaps so check out the availability calendar or message me for details. 🥰

The cottage has had a lovely fresh paint of the main living and kitchen area over the winter. It’s super fresh and airy. Plus it’s got a fab new Nespresso Vertuo machine for those who need a coffee fix first thing! The sun has even returned for the start of the Easter holidays! We even have availability from Tuesday 11th April if you fancied a last minute getaway. Message me for details or comment below, book direct for best prices. 😊

It’s been toooo long since I posted here! Life has been ticking along with ups and downs but here we are, the 1st April and finally the rains have stopped! It’s been a wet March after a dry start to the year and I’m hoping we are now entering Spring. We have availability in the cottage, especially in May which is probably one of the best months to visit the county. Check out the website or drop me a message to book. We’d love to see you!

Yesterday, Goodwick Fishguard RNLI had an open day so we went to show support and they also were providing access to the North Breakwater pier. This is closed to the public and forms the outer massive breakwater for Fishguard port and the Stena ferry amongst other crafts. First built in 1906 it was strengthened in 1920 with the huge concrete blocks visible in the pictures to disperse the power of the sea before it reached the inner breakwater. It’s approximately 850m long to the light at the end. Yesterday was windy but sunny and we watched dolphins catching mackerel in the deep waters beyond the pier head. 🐬

It’s scorchio here in Pembrokeshire- no better time to explore the stunning hills and coastlines close to Danclawdd. Last week was a little cooler and perfect for wandering around Pwll Deri, one of my favourite stretches of coastal path.

We are fully booked until 16th September but have good availability from that date onwards. Autumn is a great time to visit as it’s quieter but often full of warm days and perfect temperatures to enjoy the peace and tranquility.

In the spirit of holidaying in even more remote places than Danclawdd we are currently in the Shetlands. House and animals are being admirably looked after by a house sitter and cottage cared for by my lovely housekeeper. I have to say - there are resemblances between some coastal parts of these islands to our beautiful home county. 🥰

Enjoying our first trip away since the first lockdown, in a fantastic place on Muckle Roe with views across the waters and bird life galore. Highly recommend a trip here if you appreciate nature, walking and beautiful vistas. Plus a bunch of incredibly friendly people, and a cake fridge!. ❤️

I’ve been very quiet updating here - my apologies! It’s been a busy time sorting things with our own house, some work travel and of course it’s been shearing time too! The sheep are delighted to be free of their heavy fleeces and to be cooler now the days are finally warming up. Here they are looking half the size they were last week!

Cold wind, hail and glorious huge skies today on a visit back to one of my favourite circular walks from Porthclais around to St Justinian’s. The scenery here never fails to disappoint and is a walk we’d always recommend. The kiosk is now open again too serving fabulous coffees, cakes, toasties, ice creams Porthclais kiosk ❤️🥰☀️

The flock has expanded! Two ewes and a wether at the back who’s half brother of Hamish in the current brood (a wether is a ram sans equipment!) Just under a year old and a blend of Icelandic, Shetland and Soay. First sheep with horns for us, but she’s a little sweetie. ❤️🥰🐑

18/02/2022

It’s been a tad breezy here today but in all honesty I think we got off lightly! No power outages, no damage to anything, just branches off trees and the sheep really had had enough by about 2pm. The cottage opens tomorrow and I had visions of the roof coming off! 😱

Bookings are coming in - check availability on the Booking link or message for details. 🥰

It’s been a very very wet weekend here in Pembrokeshire! Thankfully last week there were a couple of lovely days where I was able to head out on the coastal path. A terrific circular walk around Aber Mawr and up to Pwll Deri one day and then a shorter stroll from Broad Haven to Haroldston Chins the next. Important to maximise the benefits of good weather!

We are getting booked now for a lot of the coming weeks so please check availability if you’d like a break in our peaceful corner of the county. 🥰❤️

If you stay at Danclawdd you’re always welcome to come and meet the pet sheep we have. Here are two of them - Basil looking regal on the bank and his sister Dot thinking of some hay. They’re mainly Herdwick sheep with a tiny bit of Suffolk in them and were bottle fed so basically behave like giant woolly labradors. Very adorable and always happy to meet new people. 🥰❤️😊
