On the route you can visit Weingut Wohlmuth in the lovely village of Kitzeck im Sausal - a top Austrian winery producing some superb wines, including Rieslings which the Sausal region is known for, sourced from its historic, steep vineyards. Weingut Hannes Sabathi is a leading light in the region of South Styria, or Südsteiermark, in Southern Austria, known especially for his superb Sauvignon Blanc wines. Located on the ‘Jägerberg’ in the wine village of Gamlitz and on the beautiful South Styria wine road, Hannes Sabathi produces some 30+ different wines from his top vineyards. You may not have heard of Austria's 'Styria' region - or 'Steiermark' - in Southern Austria, but you really need to have it on your radar! Not only is it stunningly beautiful, with rolling green hills and steep vineyards - known as Austria's 'Tuscany' region - but the wines are amazing, the hospitality is wonderful and there are lots of wine, cycle and hiking routes to choose from! Sauvignon Blanc is the key wine - in fact some of the best and most age-worthy Sauvignon Blancs in the world come from here. There are 3 sub-regions: Südsteiermark, Weststeiermark and Vulkanland Steiermark and the southern edge of the region borders with Slovenia and its wine region Stajerska. Hopefully these photos go some way to showing how beautiful this Austrian wine region is - if you want to discover something different and get off the beaten track, then why not check it out!

Czechia in Central Europe is well known for its beer production, but it also has a growing reputation for wine. 2.5-3 hours south-east of capital city Prague and just over an hour from Austria's capital city Vienna, lies Czechia's main wine growing region, Moravia. This beautiful region produces mostly white wines, similar to those just over the border in Austria and Germany, as well as local white grape Pálava and there are 4 distinct sub-regions. We recently visited and spent a bit of time in the main wine capital, Mikulov, with its historic castle and old town and also visited 'Valtice Castle', a spectacular, baroque masterpiece, UNESCO World Heritage Site and former residence of the princes of Liechtenstein. Here you can also visit the National Wine Salon and taste 100 of the top Czech wines! If you want to discover new wines (and sample the beer!), try Moravia in Czechia, spend a few days there or perhaps a day trip from Vienna?

Weingut Bürgerspital in Germany's baroque wine city Würzburg, in the Franken wine region, is one of the most famous, prestigious and historic wine estates in the world. It was formed in 1316 as a charity and private foundation to care for the city's sick and elderly and its mission remains unchanged today, with its charitable activities largely funded by the proceeds from property management and the winery. You can visit the historic cellars in the heart of Würzburg, taste the magnificent wines and walk through the special vineyards, including the famous 'premier cru' Würzburger Stein vineyard. Germany's former kingdom of Bavaria is probably a region you would associate more with beer than wine - right? However Bavaria's wine region 'Franken', stretching out around the lovely River Main, not far from Frankfurt, has a wine history spanning some 1200 years, is home to some of the world's most famous vineyards and produces some of the country's finest wines! The main grape here is Silvaner and the region is known for its distinctive flat, squat-shaped wine bottles - the Bocksbeutel. The wine industry here is focused around the beautiful, historic, baroque city of Würzburg, with its heritage-listed ‘Würzburg Residence’ and medieval ‘Marienberg Würzburg’ fortress. If you love wine, culture and history, this is a great region to visit if you're planning a trip around Germany!

Another English 'wine tourism' gem in is the fabulous Wiston Estate in West Sussex in south-east England - one of our absolute favourites! Not only is the English sparkling wine wine award-winning, in terms of wine tourism a visit ticks all of the boxes! Great tours and tastings, fabulous walks and bike rides in the beautiful South Downs, a great shop - and an excellent restaurant 'Chalk' and outside snacks 'Chalk Express'! It's also very close to the beautiful south coast, historic Arundel Castle and the seaside towns of Brighton, Worthing and Littlehampton. What a great day out!

Today is - once described as ‘the Queen of grapes’ and enjoying a renaissance in recent years, Riesling (pronounced ‘Reesling’, not ‘Riseling’), produces an amazing range of styles, from bone dry to lusciously sweet and is distinctive for its elegance, acidity, complexity, longevity – and extraordinary versatility with food.
More than half of the world's Riesling vines are planted in Germany and a quarter of all German wine is made from it. Premium German vineyard sites are planted exclusively with German Riesling and some of the most famous are found in the Mosel wine region. On it seems only fitting to recognise Riesling icon, trailblazer and ambassador Ernst Loosen, whose family has been growing Riesling grapes and producing Mosel Riesling wine for over 200 years. Much of the Riesling renaissance around the world since the late 1980s can be attributed to him and no trip to Germany's Mosel region is complete without a visit to his estate - ranked No 9 in the World's Best Vineyards List, 2024!

Deutschkreutz is the heartland of Austria's red wine region, Mittelburgenland and here one grape variety dominates - Austria's native 'Blaufränkisch'. With at least 300 days of sunshine a year and heavy, deep loam soils, this part of Austria is perfect for producing red wine. Weingut K+K Kirnbauer in Deutschkreutz is a Blaufränkisch trailblazer and helped to launch Austria's red wine culture with its iconic red wine blend 'DAS PHANTOM'. We highly recommend visiting K+K Kirnbauer to discover these amazing Austrian red wines and to discover this beautiful wine region!

February 16th each year marks International Syrah/Shiraz Day and we're reminded of spending time in the Canberra region of New South Wales, Australia when we visited top Shiraz wine producer Clonakilla Wines - what superb wines and what a superb wine tasting! Clonakilla is world-famous for its single varietal Shiraz wines, but mostly for its blend - Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier (80% Shiraz, 12% Pinot Noir, 7% Mataro and 1% Viognier). We can highly recommend visiting Clonakilla in Murrumbateman just outside the city of Canberra and on International Syrah/Shiraz Day, maybe try one of their famous wines!

'Priorat' in Catalonia, north east Spain, is a very special, beautiful and remote wine region, with an incredible history, which produces some of Spain’s most highly praised - and highly priced - wines. To visit Priorat is an amazing experience, to learn about these famous wines and the region's long history direct from the hard-working farming communities and to discover the steep vine-covered slopes, winding roads, small villages and of course the traditional gastronomy.
Priorat is a very special Spanish wine region - just 2 hours drive from Barcelona and 1 hour from Tarragona - make a plan to visit, you won't regret it!
