In addition, a 60lb+ (30kg) common and mirror also graced its banks during the month of April/May, not forgetting a 29kg common as well! Leon Lake is a ‘big fish’ water that doesn’t give up its prizes easily. The carp are not only huge, with an average weight of 40lb+, but they’re also notoriously difficult to catch having been hunted by some of the best French, Dutch and German big fish anglers for quite some time. We caught up with Kieran Duff following his capture of a British record common carp.

“Kris, I think Ive got him!
I called my wife, my dad and my brother to tell them, I think it’s job done!
My brother actually jumped out his bed at 3:30 and came to the lake!
Still doubting that I had caught what I thought could have been the target, I needed Kris to confirm it.
He Did.
I’d done it!
4 years and more in the making!
I was shaking, soaking wet and freezing cold but did I care! Not on your life!
I put the fish in the XL retainer, made sure it was safe and put the kettle on.
By this time, my brother Terry, Sam and Paul the other bailiffs had all arrived and had come to share this moment and help with the weighing and photographing of the fish.
We got all of the camera and weighing equipment ready and I went in to get the sling. This time with waders on at least!
We got it up on the hook f the tripod and the needle of the scales spun around to 66lb 08oz!
66.8lb of Monstrous UK Common Carp. I was beyond buzzing and couldn’t really understand how I caught it.
Bailiff Sam was on the camera and with Kris aiding with the fish in the water, Terry and Paul doing videos from the bank, they’d all helped capture the moment beautifully. A moment I’ll never forget!
Whilst we were photographing and weighing the fish, talk got quickly on to where this fish ranked with other big carp that the UK has produced.
At this moment, after banding a few fish names around, we realised it was the largest living UK bred carp currently alive and the largest common the country has ever produced!
The feeling of elation just went up a notch when I realised I was holding a piece of history in my arms! I never wanted to let the fish go. I wanted to hold that moment and that feeling forever!

CATCH REPORT 🏴 🎥
Last week we posted a picture of Kevin Remfry clutching a 29lb common whilst ‘working’ at the new Lyons Drove Fishery in Cambridge.
Well, it appears catching carp runs in the family because here’s Kevin’s son Dan Remfry with a mega 33lb mirror carp caught from his local Essex Syndicate venue.
Dan used a concoction of DNA Baits products to entice the bite. Good angling!

Lyons Drove Fishery - Cambridgeshire
Lyons Drove Fishery, which is a new day ticket complex of lakes, is opening in Cambridge during April 2024.
This week our man Huey, AKA Richard Huett, was invited to join the team working at the lakes for some ‘test fishing’ before the gates open to the general public.
Huey decided to fish the larger 20 acre lake on site which is estimated to contain 500-550 carp to 30lb+.
The stock contains a mix of carp strains with the majority of them being the Croatian Cross strain, which have been reared on site by NG Fisheries.
Using simple tactics Huey landed 12 fish during his 4 night session and the majority of the carp weighed 20lb+.
The carp could be seen ‘boshing’ out regularly through the mornings and were clearly active and feeding.
Consequently Huey used approximately 15kg of bait during his session which he deployed at range using a Spomb.
Three rods were then cast to the baited area and the takes were thick and fast!
As mentioned the venue will be available to book for the general public from April 2024.

Chalkney Syndicate Netting
Today we were invited along to a netting at Chalkney Syndicate, located near Colchester in Essex.
As usual Gary Bayes of NG Fisheries was in attendance along with Neville Rice of Blasford Hill Fishery as well.
The aim of the netting was to remove a number of the silver fish to reduce the biomass of the water.
There are two lakes on site. The lake netted today contains a number of features including several islands as well as relatively deep margins.
The depth of the margins can make netting a difficult task, especially so considering recent rainfall added an extra 1ft or so to the overall depth.
Nevertheless the lad’s persevered with the job at which resulted in the removal of 86lb of silvers as well as giving the syndicate members a chance to inspect some of the resident carp.
As ever, Gary was keen to point out the obvious signs of cormorant predation, which is becoming increasingly common in his line of work.
It’s certainly something we feel fishery managers and anglers alike should be aware of.

Today we attended a netting at Maldon Angling Society (M.A.S) club water located in Heybridge, Essex.
This is your typical club lake fishery with the stock containing a real mix of species including specimen carp, tench, bream, roach, eels, perch, pike, koi, ide, fantail goldfish etc…
The purpose of the netting was to reduce the biomass of the fishery. The fishery manager (Daniel Gower) informed us the lake had suffered from several oxygen crashes during the previous summer and the advice the club received from the EA was to take action by reducing the number of fish in the lake.
The first pull of the net was particularly difficult as we’d trapped a large amount of silt in the bottom of the net. It made pulling the net in very difficult, so much so that we had to dispatch the boat to lift the net above the silt pocket. We were pleased to have as many of the Maldon Members assisting us on the day, without them, we feel several chiropractors would’ve been required!
Anyway, carp to 25lb were returned with approximately 50 carp of 10lb average were removed and redistributed to existing M.A.S waters.
This is a perfect example of a club, which is run on tight budgets, making the most of their existing fish stock by moving fish to their other waters. (Subject to clean health checks.)
Our best estimates are 500lb of small common carp were removed on the day with approximately 500lb - 600lb of silver fish also removed from the lake.
This should provide plenty of room, food and oxygen for the remaining stock, which we anticipate will flourish in the coming months.
