A cosily sophisticated bolthole from everyday life. Updown is equally suitable for couples craving a romantic retreat to groups of family and friends looking to share time away together. The cottage sleeps up to 6 people (+ a baby) in 2 double and 2 single bedrooms with 3 bath or shower rooms which makes it sound huge but the bedrooms are cosy and ‘16th century’ in size! At cooler times, snuggle on the lushly generous sofas by the woodburning stove....in warmer weather, while away the afternoon on the sheltered terrace, drinking in the views. At any time, resurrect long forgotten musical abilities on the baby grand piano or spend long evenings laughing, feasting & imbibing around the antique refectory table. The many popular wedding venues in the area (Larmer Tree Gardens, The Hotel Grosvenor, Springhead) make the cottage a romantic base for bridal parties & honeymoons. Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset offer a wealth of superb local produce to enjoy either in the cottage, (equipped for dining for 12 guests if you’d like to invite guests to dinner - a private chef may be arranged) or in the many recommended cafes, restaurants, delis and pubs. Shaftesbury is a small town with over a thousand years of history, set 700 feet up at the meeting of three counties. The independent shops, market stalls, galleries, museums, craft centres, pubs and eating places thrive against the background of such character. Gold Hill featured in Ridley Scott's 1970s Hovis 'Boy on a Bicycle' advert and numerous films from 'Far from the Madding Crowd' to the 2009 short films 'Taxi Driver' and 'Gold Hill' shot in Updown Cottage by Zeitgeist Industries. The cottage is the perfect base for exploring castles, abbeys, cathedrals, music festivals, Stonehenge, stately homes, the Jurassic coast, walks, bike rides, pony trekking, golf......or simply kicking back and relaxing!
