Check out the new Manchester Green Spaces trail which is being launched ahead of summer celebrating the best green, blue and outdoor areas in the city centre. It features 16 garden and water spaces within central Manchester and Salford and takes visitors on a route through the centre stopping by parks, gardens and water spaces along the way. You can download a map of the route at cityco.com or copies will be available to pick up at The Manchester Flower Festival at St Anns Square which is taking place between 24-27 May. This free festival transforms the city centre with themed decorations and green installations alongside live music, entertainment, alfresco food and drink, talks, demonstrations and workshops. There’s loads going on in Manchester over the late May bank holiday weekend including Manchester Flower Festival where they’ll be floral installations, outdoor dining, live music and entertainment. There’s also a floral trail where you’ll find 10 professionally designed displays all themed around “Manchester in Flowers.” This includes a blossoming beehive, a floral computer and a tribute to Manchester’s suffragettes. It’s free and open to all!

There’s also the Deansgate Mews Street Festival where you can expect an outdoor pop-up stage at the Lions Den which will host over 30 live local acts across 3 days alongside food and drink offers from the restaurants and bars situated on Deansgate Mews. There will also be many outdoor market stalls including a pop up gift emporium with local Manchester brands. The festival will run from Friday 26 – Sunday 28 May and is also free to attend. Hamilton is coming to the Palace Theatre in Manchester for a 15 week season from Saturday 11 November 2023 until Saturday 24 February 2024. Tickets go onsale at 10am today! The multi award winning show opened in London in 2017 and this is the first time it will tour the UK. If you're lucky enough to get tickets and need somewhere to stay Lowther House Prestwich is only 3.8 miles from the city centre so an excellent place to stay and explore the city. The Christmas markets are also on a the same time so why not make a weekend of it? 🙂

Just a ten minute drive or a couple of stops on the tram from Lowther House is the awarding winning Chocolatier and Patissier, Slattery Patissier & Chocolatier. It’s definitely worth a visit. Located in a 3 storey Victorian building, on the ground floor you’ll find a shop that sells a wide range of treats and food based gifts along with the celebration and wedding cake showroom which has over 40 amazing wedding cakes on display.

On the first floor you’ll find Masons Dining Room which serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon teas. They even do a Children’s afternoon tea and you get chocolate discs with your drinks which is a lovely treat.

Whilst you're there why not try the famous Slattery Chocolate Challenge which involves eating a large portion of their American style chocolate fudge cake with a portion of homemade chocolate ice cream, a portion of fresh cream and two chocolate pots filled with liquid chocolate sauce. With that you get a glass of any of their hot chocolate drinks. If you manage to eat all this on your own you’ll be rewarded with a Slattery chocolate medal and a 100g box of handmade chocolates. Sounds like a delicious challenge for all you serious chocoholics! 😋

If you’re visiting Manchester city centre why not check out the locations where many blockbuster films and hit TV shows have been filmed? Here’s just a small selection:

Captain America

There’s a short scene in Marvel’s Captain America where you can spot a glimpse of Dale Street, Finlay’s warehouse and Tariff & Dale early on in the film. After Steve Rogers’ transformation into a super soldier you’ll see him in an action packed chase scene which sees him running through New York except its actually the Northern Quarter transformed into a 1940s film set.

The Crown

Manchester’s Northern Quarter was completely transformed into 1980s New York back in February 2020 as Netflix filmed season 4 of the Crown. Scenes were shot in and around the Northern Quarter’s Stevenson Square, Dale Street Back Piccadilly, John Rylands library, the University of Manchester’s Renold building and outside the Peter Street Kitchen at the former free trade hall. The scenes that were filmed in Manchester were of Princess Diana’s solo trip to New York in 1989

Peaky Blinders

The hit TV show Peaky Blinders has made use of many Manchester attractions and local spots like Dale Street, Back Piccadilly and Mangle Street throughout its filming. More recently the series was filmed in Castlefield.

Darkest Hour and Sherlock Holmes

The Town Hall in Manchester has also been a popular filming location for many years. The interior has been used to replicate the Palace of Westminster twice on the big screen – once in Sherlock Holmes in 2009 and again in Darkest Hour in 2017.

Coronation Street

Let’s not forget Prestwich 😉 St Mary’s church in Prestwich has been used for many years for weddings, funerals and christenings on Coronation Street and is just a short walk from Lowther House. Check it out! 🙂

Lots of fun and free activities for kids at Heaton Park & Hall over half term. For those kids that have half term the week commencing 13 February, the nature detective spotter sheets will be available the whole week. If you don't feel like cooking while staying at Lowther House there are plenty of really good takeaways nearby. Why not try Chips at No.8 This Prestwich chippy was named amongst the very best in the country by Fry Magazine Awards 2022. Out of over 10,500 fish and chips shops it made Frymagazine.com top 50 fish and chips takeaways in the country for the second year running.

It's also been named as one of the 20 places to eat in Manchester in 2023 by the Manchester Evening News and one of the best in the country by the National Federation of Fish Fryers.

And if you really need another reason for get down there all profits from their battered crème eggs this year will go to which is a Manchester based non profit organisation which provides meals made by chefs to people sidelined by poverty in Greater Manchester. A fantastic cause.

While your there take a look at the mural of the late Fall singer Mark E Smith by graffiti artist Aske P19 painted on the side of the chippy.

Eurovision Liverpool 2023! Today, last year's host city, Turin, will hand over "the keys" to Eurovision to Liverpool who are hosting the competition this year on behalf of Ukraine.
