Salford City Council has announced Swinton Ark, a spectacular free-to-attend animated projection onto Salford Civic Centre (formerly Swinton & Pendlebury Town Hall) celebrating Swinton through memories and stories from local people, that will be taking place on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 January 2025 from 5pm to 8pm.

Created by projection artists Illuminos, this unique sound and light show is inspired by Swinton and its residents.Featuring personal stories gathered by local artist Lowri Evans, who asked a wide range of people around Swinton ‘if you could save one object, what would it be?’, the entirety of the former town hall building’s 70 metre facade will come alive with 3d mapped animation, music and sound.

The whole of the building’s Chorley Road frontage will be transformed into the Ark; a vast and gleaming vessel of wood and glass. In the dark winter nights, Swinton's Ark will set sail. Waves crash and rain falls, but the Ark is strong and the story begins. Contained within it like an enormous cabinet of curiosities are the objects, moments and memories of Swinton residents - things that they would save from the flood, precious markers of events, times, and places.

Elizabeth Gaskell’s House announces Inaugural Writers Residency
Elizabeth Gaskell's House in Manchester has announced the launch of a new project that will celebrate ten years since the house opened as a visitor attraction and introduce the work of Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) to a new generation of writers. 10 Years of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House: Inaugural Writers Residency is funded by National Lottery players, via The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and will partner with The Writing Squad and Manchester City of Literature.

RHS Garden Bridgewater Launches New Artist in Residence Programme

RHS Garden RHRHS Garden Bridgewaters thrilled to announce the launch of its new Artist in Residence programme, in collaboration with the University of Salford Art Collection. This exciting initiative invites visitors to experience the garden from a fresh artistic perspective, working with renowned visual artist and photographer, Dr Yan Wang Preston.
Yan Wang Preston will begin her residency with research and development, focusing on the historic Worsley New Hall site, an area of the garden that is currently largely off-limits to the public. Daniel Atherton, RHS Regional Interpretation Coordinator explains, “This part of the garden holds a fascinating history, shaped by the estate’s rich past, from its industrial roots to its horticultural rebirth. The project will explore the hidden stories within this ‘cosmopolitan wilderness’, revealing the connections between nature, history, and diverse cultures around the world.”
This will be followed by a public programme starting in March 2025, featuring workshops and a pop-up display at RHS Garden Bridgewater. The culmination of her work will be presented in the spring and summer of 2026, when her new outdoor installations will be showcased within the garden. Hundreds of Oldham people had their artwork beamed onto an iconic theatre in the culmination of an innovative digital exhibition ‘glowing up’ the town.
The GlowBus project from arts charity Stand & Be Counted Theatre took a transformed yellow school bus on tour around Oldham communities last week.
School pupils, shoppers and passers-by were able to climb on board and make creations - from illustrations to origami or film - inside the fun, immersive experience.
On Saturday evening, all the artworks were projected onto Oldham’s LLyceum Theatre Oldhambefore the Christmas lights switch-on took place.

Work starts on Manchester’s newest (and smallest) public square.
Capital & Centric have started working on the small yet perfectly formed public square that will link their owner occupier community Crusader with new workspaces at Neptune Mill in Piccadilly East.

Images reveal how the social impact developers are taking on the outdoor space outside their restoration of the Grade II listed Neptune Mill – and if their previous projects are anything to go by, this one’s going to be a stunner.

The square, which has been closed off to the public for decades, will give off industrial vibes alongside lush green planting, reminiscent of the developer’s award-winning Kampus garden neighbourhood. The Piccadilly East community will soon be able to enjoy this green oasis, which sits underneath a sky bridge linking Crusader to Neptune Mill – the only one of its kind in the city.
