Death Valley, located mostly in eastern California, is a land of extremes. It's both the hottest and driest place in North America, with summer temperatures soaring above 130°F (54°C) and scant rainfall throughout the year. Badwater Basin, at 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level, is the lowest point in North America. Death Valley is also vast, encompassing an area of about 3,000 square miles (7,800 square kilometers) and forming a major part of Death Valley National Park. The park itself is the largest national park in the contiguous United States, protecting a variety of desert landscapes including salt flats, sand dunes, mountain ranges, and even oases that support surprising plant and animal life.
