Marazion School to Commemorate Renovation of Gwelva Boat Landing with 100-Year Time Capsule.

On Friday, 19th July 2024, the official unveiling of a commemorative plaque marking the spot of a unique 100-year time capsule will take place on the newly renovated Gwelva boat landing, this is one of the boat landings that takes visitors to and from the Mount. This event will be a celebration of the past, present and future, connecting today’s generation with those a century from now.

Kerry Rice, Head of Learning for St Aubyn Estates, worked with every pupil at Marazion School to create the contents for the time capsule. Inspired by the iconic Newlyn School artists who vividly depicted Cornish life a century ago, the capsule contains drawings, writings and projects created by the children.

Meet the Team - Head Boatman & Island Resident Josh ⛵️

Many of you ask us about members of the team and about the people who live on the island, so over the next few months we will introduce you to some familiar faces around the Mount and tell you a bit more about what they do.

First up in this new segment is Josh, who is happiest when on the water. Josh has lived on the island for nearly 20 years, so if you have visited us over the years you might recognise his welcoming smile.

He lives on the island with his partner Emily and cats Dave and Doris, who are regular social media stars and can often be spotted watching the comings and goings of island life. When asked about his favourite thing about boating, Josh replied: "It's really hard to explain how much being a boatman gets under your skin, it's in my blood. It is a lifestyle for me. Days when I am not in a ferry never feel the same."

Since getting his license in 2010 and with about 35,000 trips to and from mainland under his captain's hat, Josh can be found at the helm of the Mary - the first of our new fleet built in 2020. He also drives the amphicraft when the public boats are docked for the winter, ferrying staff and island residents to and from Marazion in all kinds of weather.

We always recommend getting a boat either to or from when you visit the island, as it adds a sense of magic to any visit ⛵️

This one is so beautiful, and I'm quite happy with how it stands out, it's lucky my brother came because I would have left and not witness these amazing hues produced from mother nature.

I hope you like it, have a lovely day.

Introducing 'The Last Giant of Marazion' book 📔

Inspired by Cornwall's rich heritage of folklore, myths and legends, Suzanna Hubbard wrote and illustrated this beautiful hardback book. What will the lonely giant do to the town of Marazion and will his blossoming friendship with a young girl be enough to heal the giant's lonely heart?

'There is one last giant hiding somewhere on the Mount', or so it was said...

Have you discovered the giant’s stony heart?

“When you venture up the cobbled path that leads to the castle at the top of St. Michael's Mount, it’s possible to see the legendary giant’s heart. Do not be fooled by the large stone by the side of the track. A giant’s heart is tiny and rather dark. You can spot it by your feet among the cobbles…”

Young people from Kesoberi CIC-Pz and Newlyn Youth Project enjoyed this and other myths and legends from the Mount on their recent visit to the island. It was a pleasure to welcome them.

Last night we lit up the castle to create awareness for Penhaligon's Friends, a Cornish charity supporting bereaved children, young people, parents and carers throughout the county. They offer children and young people the chance to meet others and share their experiences, as well as provide practical resources for children and parents.

Penhaligon's Friends deliver an extensive programme of training and advice for other childcare professionals and those interested in becoming a volunteer. Over the years the organisation has grown and there are now five full time and five part time staff members and a dedicated team of over 80 volunteers.

We recently welcomed some visitors all the way from the United States of America who sent us a wonderful photo that they took during their visit. They also left us a lovely review, including some special feedback on our wonderful guides who are not only filled with interesting information about the island but who do it all with a welcoming smile...

"We recently visited from the US and I cannot tell you how much we loved our visit to the island. Everything from the cheerful greeters, to the stunning views, to the fun workers who rode the boat back to Marazion at the end of the day with us, and were so fun and engaging. It was such a lovely time and visit. We were staying in Marazion so we often walked on the beach in the evenings savouring our view and our time away in beautiful Cornwall."

Many thanks to Kate and her family for taking their time to share your feedback with us and we hope to welcome you back again in the future 🏰

Island closed after 13:00 today - Friday 14th of June

The stormy seas have affected the channel we use to get the boats to and from the island and will prevent the ferry boats from operating after 13:00 on Friday 14th of June.

The last boat to the island, and the final castle and garden admissions will be 11:45am. The final boat will leave the island at 13:00.

If you have a ticket booked for this date, you can use your existing ticket to visit on any other day this week when the island is open (please note the island is closed on Saturdays).

We are sorry if this means you cannot visit. Any tickets that are not used will be refunded in full automatically at the end of the week and we expect monies to be returned to the accounts from which payments were made within 5-7 business days. You do not need to contact us to receive this refund.

We are a tidal island that is governed by the forces of nature and sometimes those elements work against us.

We hope to be able to welcome you onto St Michael’s Mount soon.

Ever wondered how the windows get cleaned at the castle?

Open to the elements on an island hill top, the sea spray and rain often whip the glass windows giving us an endless task to keep them clean

Thanks to P and C Cleaning Service for having a good head for heights and for using their skills to get up to clean our high windows

Interesting post from Britain Magazine

Did you know the modern name for St. Michael's Mount comes from the legend that the Archangel Michael was spotted on the island by some fishermen in 495 AD?

A religious community was founded there, and in the 13th century a number of miracles were recorded on the Mount. The tidal island was an important pilgrimage site throughout the Middle Ages, with hundreds of the faithful making their way across the cobbled causeway, as many still do today!
