About No. 7 by the Sea
Margate is somewhere we have always loved to visit. We love the energy of the town - you can really tell that it is up and coming and every time we came back it felt like there were lots of new independent cafes, restaurants, bars and shops to try out. This, combined with the beautiful coastline and sandy beaches, and also the heritage of a traditional British seaside destination, plus the links to some of Britain’s most famous artists such as JMW Turner and Tracey Emin, meant there was always something to do - rain or shine. In 2017, we decided we loved Margate so much that we would buy a flat, and share it with others to enjoy.
Heritage
No. 7 by the Sea is within a Georgian townhouse on the seafront. It was built around 1900, opposite the famous Margate Lido (formally known as the Cliftonville Bathing Pool). Sitting on top of a network of smugglers’ passageways, it opened in 1926 to cater for the popularity of sea bathing at the time, and consisted of bars, cafes and an indoor warm sea water pool and changing facilities. The Lido was hugely popular from its construction right through to the 1960s. Sadly in January 1978, a severe storm destroyed Margate pier and caused considerable damage to the Lido. Reconstruction work was not carried out and to this day the Lido remains closed. Whilst the areas of Margate and Cliftonville are experiencing a period of rapid regeneration, there are plans being discussed to renovate the Lido complex. And in the meantime, for those fans of outdoor swimming, Walpole Bay Tidal Pool - a short walk down the road - is fully-functioning, even in Winter!
