The Melksham Transport User Group, has, sadly, decided with Santa to cancel his planned to visit us by train on Sunday, 5th December 2021.
The "Santa Train" has run for many years and this will only be the third time it has not run in 25 years. However, the close mixing of a lot of young children, parents and grandparents that the trip involves, at a time of high Coronavirus cases on a busy train seems unwise. And we don't know what it will be like in five weeks - it's better to cancel now and look forward to next year. Thank You to everyone who helped in the early planning of this event, including the TransWilts team who were set to open the cafe at the station specially that day.
If you want to meet Santa, we understand he will be at the Assembly Hall (where there is a lot more space) on Saturday, 4th December, and various other places around the area too, in early December.
Although Santa won't be on the train this December, normal services continue to run right up to Christmas Eve - about every 2 hours to Chippenham and Swindon, and about every 2 hours to Trowbridge and Westbury - and without the thronging crowds that Santa attracts, the local trains will have plenty of safe space. Why not take the grandchildren for a trip?
The Melksham Transport User Group meets at 19:30 on Wednesday 10th November - on Zoom (code will be on our page and website) and we'll also be "In Real Life" at 48, Spa Road , SN12 7NY. No need to book on Zoom - in person, please let us know.
While you are reading this ... several of our members are helping in the campaign to save through trains from London to Trowbridge and Bradford-on-Avon. This brings back memories of our fight for trains in Melksham. If you can, please help by signing Graham's online petition at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/598397. You can read an update before you sign at https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/crazy-culling-trains-graham-ellis . Thank you – see you on Zoom in 9 days!
P.S. - Can you guess the year of the picture??
[Stop Press] - sad to hear of the railway accident in Salisbury yesterday evening. Our thought with those involved - relieved that everyone got out safe, hoping that the injuries sustained by the driver of the SWR train are not lifechanging. Rail remains just about the safest way to travel. Accidents like this make the headlines because of there very rarity. Posting this separately too.
