Down at the bottom of our road there are odd things happening - mentions of film making, additions to the old road bridge at Leaderfoot and the name Sam Mendes is allegedly being touted and a bit more......watch this space and did anyone mention to them that Harrison Ford has already trod this path!!

Following a disastrous burst pipe episode, the Stables Cottage had to be completely renovated. We took the opportunity to renew/upgrade much of the contents and facilities the cottage has. Here are a few images to illustrate what has been achieved:

Here are some (and there are many more!) of our reviews:

Great stay at Kirkland’s. Very well equipped kitchen and a comfortable bed made it a perfect cottage for my 5 day fishing trip on the Tweed. Melrose is a lovely town conveniently with a Coop and a number of pubs and restaurants. After a day wading on the Tweed nearby I chose to cook in the cottage but next time I’ll try some of the local restaurants. Douglas met me on arrival and explained everything thoroughly. Highly recommend and I’m my opinion it is great value for the money.
C, England

Douglas is a wonderful, thoughtful host. The cottage is in a beautiful rural location with a well stocked kitchen and the living room was extra cosy with a log fire. The kids loved the luxurious electric blankets - a must for those cold Scottish winter nights! - Debbie

This cottage is spacious, clean and well-equipped with comfy beds. The site is very attractive in the courtyard and it's a great location to visit the beautiful Scottish Borders.
Gillian

A very peaceful cottage with extremely comfy beds (good duvets, linen and heated underblankets!). Lovely base for exploring the Borders and handy for the A68 to Edinburgh. Good wifi and hot water! Kitchen well equipped. Very good value and definitely recommended.
Susanna

Lovely hide away. Felt peaceful and isolated but Melrose is just a few minutes car drive and is a perfect little tourist town. The cottage is maybe a little old fashioned for some peoples taste but it has everything you need and good internet connection. The real beauty is outside. All the countryside you could ever need!

We were delighted to receive the following from guests Mike and Mollie:

Nearby is Thirlestane Castle Lauder and of course Melrose with the abbey and gardens.
Close by Melrose is Abbotsford the home of Sir Walter Scott. Here entry to the visitor centre was free but there is a fee to visit the grounds and the house. The house is well worth a visit and we would recommend a guided tour if possible. Also worth a visit is Sir Walter Scotts resting place Dryburgh Abbey, a short drive from Kirklands. Also connected to Sir Walter is Smailholm Tower this side of Kelso. The tower is, we think closed at the moment for renovations.
A short distance south on the A68 is Jedburgh with a visitor centre in the tower house in which Mary Queen of Scots' stayed for month in 1566 and was a turning point in her life. Also in Jedburgh is the Jedburgh Castle Jail & Museum which we think is still free.
Just off the A68 on the way to Jedburgh is Monteviot House but be aware that it has restricted opening times. A visit here is a good opportunity to take in Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre (free) which lies on St Cuthbert’s Way, one of Scotland’s most popular long distance paths. a few metres down the road from Harestanes is the Woodside Plant Centre and Tea Room (the Tea room being the centre of attraction here!) In the Peebles area there is the Royal Botanic Garden at Dawyck, Kailzie Gardens and Traquair reputed to be Scotland's oldest inhabited house.
This year we visited both Dawyck and Kailzie.
An easy ride into Kelso is Floors Castle. There is a fee for the grounds and gardens but is well worth a visit as is the house, entry to which has an additional fee. We had a good day here this year.
Towards Selkirk is Bowhill grounds and house. There is an entry fee to Bowhill.
Mellerstain House and gardens is another venue that is an easy drive from Kirklands but is was closed this year (CoVid).
A pleasant cross country drive away is Paxton House on the banks of the Tweed. Paxton hosts a number of events through the year mainly focusing on music. In June however, a charity motor show is held in the grounds which we have enjoyed three times now over the years.
Those guests who are members of the National Trust may find a journey across the border to Cragside worthwhile. Cragside was the home of Lord & Lady Armstrong and the first house in the world to be lit by electricity and has extensive ground and walks. It is well worth a visit but is expensive for non members. (We are National Trust Members!) Edinburgh is of course just up the road and we have been there two or three times over the years, and we have on different occasions used the Edinburgh park and ride system and the excellent rail service from Tweedbank.
Finally we must mention Rosslyn Chapel located within the village of Roslin, off A701 near Edinburgh. Rosslyn Chapel came to worldwide prominence through The Da Vinci Code, a novel written by Dan Brown and its fame is such that it was very busy indeed when we were there. It was, however, an enjoyable visit.

Our thanks for the feedback, much appreciated

Successful few days for our most recent B&B guests - main purpose of visit was to fish (Bemersyde beat, about 5 - 10 minutes from Kirklands) and was a happy angler with result - see image. Also was interested in astrophotography and supplied this superb image. The guest was impressed with clarity of night sky albeit cloud did interfere with some attempts!
