With most of the public Fireworks displays happening over the weekend it may be a quiet November 5th tomorrow night!

We managed to grab a handful of images from the weekend with Tan-Ex and Laserpromo on the ICI on Saturday, TragoOfficial on the Friday and Clwb Crown on Sunday night.

If you would like to see more fireworks you can view them here:

The Merthyr Half Marathon took place today in damp conditions but that didn't deter several hundred runners, volunteers and spectators taking to the Taff and Trevithick Heritage Trails to run and support over the 13.1 miles.

Congratulations to all that took part and thank you to the supporters cheering on the runners at every stage.

More photos will be made available on Monday evening once they have been prepared.

Well done Merthyr Tydfil and all that ran and supported this event.

Merthyr Tydfil acts as a central launch pad for a large number of locations and activities all within an easy 20 minute car journey.

Importantly Merthyr Tydfil sits on the boundary of a dark skies reserve which makes viewing the sky and stars much easier.

One of these is the mighty Brecon Beacons National Park.

Last night at 6pm and again at 9pm there was a celestial event which could be seen from Libanus (A470 North out of the Town)

The Northern Lights put on a great display which you can see here in the various green and red colours and in particular the vertical columns.

The further North you go, the better your chances, but these can often be seen from Pontsticill Reservoir and other high vantage points within the Borough looking North towards Pen y Fan.

Brecon Beacons National Park
Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park was the first area to be given International Dark Sky Reserve status in Wales (and only the fifth in the world!) in 2013. The park stretches around 40 miles (64 km) from Abergavenny to Llandeilo across the eastern half of South Wales.

Despite the park’s southern borders being less than an hour by car from the country’s two largest cities, Cardiff and Swansea, on a clear night connoisseurs of the cosmos can spy the Milky Way, major constellations, and – if timed well – even meteor showers.
