Last Minute Space

Luke has had a space come up for a shark trip (and maybe tuna) on Saturday 28th September. It looks like the weather will break to allow us to get out. If you fancy getting some toothy action and screaming reels, drop us a line. (Trip runs from Milford Haven)

PO***CK, BLUES AND A TUNA

SATURDAY:
Odyssey and Ocean lined up for the first time on the Mackerel Quay ahead of two very different days at sea. Emma took Odyssey and crew around Skolkholm and Skomer for a morning of drifting for edibles.

Around slack water, we made our way out to the Hats and Barrels where each drift saw nice Po***ck and several Scad reeled in on Silver Dreams.

As the wave height was increasing, we made our way back inshore for a final drift on the banks and time to fillet the fish.

Species: Scad, Pollack, Pouting, Coalfish, Ballan Wrasse

I/Emma was beaming from ear to ear when Odyssey and I parked up at the end of the day. Can't wait for next time! Alan Morgan

Luke and Ocean spent the day on the sharks with Grant Bath and friends, who reeled in 8 lovely blues, with several over 100lb.

SUNDAY:
Like Saturday, the conditions weren't ideal for Tuna, with little activity on the water, including dolphins, we made our way out to the shark grounds.

As normal, the blues must have smelt the coffee, every time the kettle boiled the reels screamed and the blues were as fiesty the waves! Grant, Anton and Greg were naturals bringing them to the boat. 13 sharks were brought to the boat with several safely brought on deck for swabbing and tagging.

After several nice blues, one reel just took off! Grant and Anton jumped to it. Within a few minutes, we thought, 'this can't be a blue, surely not?!' Many ideas came to mind but after 50 mins of reeling in and turning the boat, we saw the silver flash of a welcome Tuna of c250lb, caught on light sharking gear. On Tuna gear, it would have been a much easier fight, but the crew did brilliantly considering.

MONDAY:
Ocean Odyssey and Celtic Wildcat headed out together for an early day of sharking, making the most of the weather window by starting early. The crew caught 4 blues before coming in ahead of the weather rolling in.

It was a fun fish filled weekend and we look forward to seeing the crew all again.

A busy day on the water today. Another 13 sharks to add to yesterday’s tally of 8. Some lovely lumps both days with multiple over the 100lb mark. Also bagged a bonus tuna of circa 250lb, bit of a scrap on blue shark gear but after a 50min fight time, it fully revived, and was sent on its way 🙂

Back out again tomorrow to see what can find…. 🦈🦈

(Better report to follow from Emma Evans who is the photographer of the team (as well as skipper) I just drive boats, find, and unhook fish 😂

BIRTHDAY BASH

Our waters were absolutely full of wildlife activity with loads of Common dolphin captured on camera by Danny, as well as very special sightings of Bottlenose dolphins which are usually found in Cardigan bay and less so in the deeps.

With Tuna on the feed in many small busts, we got out the spreader bars and did a spot of popping in turn. They were pretty finicky and disappeared quickly as we moved closer. 🐟🎣

We had a few dropped fish, but all came good in the end for the crew and birthday boy.

It was great to see Pad come down from the North to join the Cats on the hunt for the Tuna, working together throughout the day. 🛥🛥🛥

Big thanks to Danny Unwin and Andrew Williams for the photos.

So Luke Evans finally got 5 mins away from the real job to pick up a recent delivery from British Big Game Fishing. After finding out that the excellent 12in T bars from batchelor (aka stainless Steve) do not actually float 🫣. We’ve got a few more replacements and spares… We also had a few more bits delivered to allow us to repair some spreader bars.

Also had a few more bits to try out some ideas to add to our spread to mix it up along with spreader bars for our fish when trolling. We will of course be looking to continue fishing live baits as well!

Big thanks to Big Game Fishing for the quality gear and quick delivery!

Time to get the crimpers out as hopefully we’ll soon be back on the water 🙂

BLUES & A DASH OF SILVER DREAMS

FRIDAY

A later start to the day allowed us to avoid the highest winds on Friday and make the most of the good weather later in the day. We steamed out to the Deeps for a day of Sharking, joined by a squad of dolphins. They gave us a great show, and start to the day. Unfortunately another T-Bar was claimed by the Celtic Deeps.

The crew brought 7 Blues to the boat and it was great to convert 2 more shark virgins, Don with a nice Blue of 110lb, and Huw with one of 60lb.

Good fish, great company, what more!?

SATURDAY

We're very pleased for our young angler, Lewis who caught is first shark, a nice Blue of just under 100lb, and followed it up with another later.

All 8 sharks were tagged in the water when possible, and with some brought on deck safely for tagging and swabbing. We're grateful to continue to be part of the tagging, and swabbing programme to understand more about these stunning creatures. It's something special when they're swimming around the boat. Pat Smith Database

With both trips aimed at Blue sharking and a dabble for Tuna on the way home, Saturday's journey was made extra special when Luke spotted the signs of Tuna, so the crew jump into action. Within 10 mins of trolling, the stern rod made that noise! Our crew couldn't believe it was true until they saw for themselves. The rod screamed and the fish took off to the sunset, and it just kept going. It was a strong one, and gave us a battle, after 45 mins she was on the gaff fighting fit ready for release.

We evaded temptation by making our way in as it would have been so easy to stay out all evening with how everyone was buzzing.

Kudos to the crew for working well together to bring the fish to the boat, recover it, and send it back to the depths of the Celtic Deeps.

Celtic Deeps Foam Party 🦈🐟🐬🐋

A busy 3 days on the water!
We knew that the Tuna were on their way as we'd seen a few fish 2 weeks ago, so it's great to see them now in numbers.

FRIDAY greeted us with light winds, flat seas, and lots of wildlife. We started a shark drift but soon afterwards an excited Rob Rennie was calling Ocean Odyssey on the radio. He'd managed a double hook up and more were showing. With a quick change of plan and we were off Tuna hunting. It's great fun to call up your mate to call each other to the nearest bust and exchange happy horn t***s on each hook up. The fish were finicky with a few dropped but managed fish up 550lb.

SATURDAY was a foam party with some stronger than forecast winds. 5 nice blues, 3 converts made, and a happy father and son moment as son caught his first shark - smiles all round. Sadly we had an early finish due to ever increasing wind.

SUNDAY, back out on the sharks.
After 10 lovely blues to 100lb, we thought we'd try for a Tuna on the way home. There didn't seem to be much activity but if you looked closely you could see the signs. 30 mins in and Ryan was into his first BFT and brought it quickly to the boat.

Anthony was up next! A screamer of a run got us to our feet as we knew this was a bit special. 30 mins into the fight, Anthony standing strong, and the rod snaps under the pure strain. After that it was stand up stubby style, and 10 mins later we saw the biggest Tuna any of us had seen - 104 inches!

We managed another on the way home to round off a special day, which Noel's skill brought it to the boat almost effortlessly.

Not many other places where can you bag a 100lb+ blue in the morning and then a 700-800lb Tuna in the afternoon! Well done to all our anglers for a top weekend.

We of course continue to swab our sharks for the Pat Smith Database as well as tag them for the pat smith database as well as for NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic which is why you see them on deck. Great to keep contributing to these important scientific programs!

Roll on the next monster weekend!

Smiles all round!

Ocean Odyssey was back out to the deeps yesterday for more shark action. It was pretty clear that certain weather forecasts were wrong as we bashed our way over every pothole and speed bump the sea had for us but she took it in her stride :).

After a bumpy journey out, we got the chum slick running. Once we settled for a few brews, the first reel went off with a sporty blue of around 90lb.

Next up was Gary on the rods with a cracker of a run. It was clear that this was a much bigger fish. After lots of sweating and a few colloquial terms from Devon, 35 mins later a cracking 200lb+ blue was to the side of the boat. It was a cracking first shark and expertly played.

A further 4 sharks for the crew made for a good day out. All fish tagged for the NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic and Pat Smith Database

Overall, it was a great day out and want to shout out to the crew for the banter and encouragement to Gary on his fish 😁🦈

Porgie Smiles Amongst The Blues

Saturday wasn't quite as forecasted so we were against it on the way out and drifting at 2-3 knots made it a tricky day and however Sunday was a stunning day in the floating office.

Tal had a cute porgie of no more than 1m long, whilst on Sunday, Jason reeled in a nice Welsh Porgie around 130lb and Nick caught his first UK shark, being a 140lb blue.

After the excitement of a silver sighting whilst steaming home, we came across a boat under stress in the haven with no life jackets or VHF to call for help, so Odyssey gave it a tow to the safety of the mackerel quay.

Many sharks swabbed and tagged for Pat Smith Database and NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic

The conditions were somewhat fluffy on Sunday, but the blues were hungry, and we managed to tag and release 5, with others taunting us around the boat.

Sadly, we lost a few days to the weather but are pleased to have caught good fish when we were able to get out.

Back out this weekend! 🦈🐟

WEEKEND ROUND-UP

Friday:
We had some great Po***ck fishing out to the smalls and around the islands in the afternoon with a mixture of species despite the somewhat lumpy conditions.

Saturday:
Saturday was a day of bright skies, flat seas and no wind - not ideal sharking conditions but we gave it a whirl. It was a real struggle to get a drift going but managed a nice blue.

Sunday:
After a slow start in the morning, the Blues must have smelt the bacon sandwiches as they just kept coming and turned the frowns upside down.

A double hook up to start us off soon got us excited. One lucky rod had a fish which soon bent the rod right over. After a tough battle there was a cracking blue which at first guess was around 180lb, he didn't want to play nicely for a photo let alone be tagged, and even managed to straighten a hook!

A few more smaller but respectable fish followed with several swabbed and tagged safely on deck before the lucky rod, once again bent over with a screaming reel.

The second, much bigger fish gave a hell of a good fight, making us wonder what was it taking the cat for a spin? When she came to the surface we couldn't believe her size and were very pleased that we managed to tag her from the door before she returned to the depths of the deeps. The photos don't do it justice, being bigger than the first and potentially over the magic 200lb mark. Hopefully she'll turn up again somewhere exotic for NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic and Pat Smith Database research.

PATSMITH DATABASE & NOAA

We enjoyed a very well worthwhile evening hosted by Pat Smith Database and
NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic , on the valuable work they do and how we as fishermen and skippers can contribute in a great way to increase our knowledge of Blue shark's habit and longevity by sharing data across the Atlantic.

We're also pleased to be taking part in the shark swabbing project in addition to tagging.

Luke was nearly as excited to have won a prize of Leadertec goodies as he was with a traditional cornish pastie and will be put to great use.

Lastly, we could not miss the opportunity of going for a quick pint at the home of the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain headquarters.

Let's go tag and swab some celtic sharks!
